WIT Studio posted a tweet on their official Twitter account on Jan 24, 2022, highlighting the requirement for staff to “create WEBTOON” and to produce “world class original content”.

Some fans misunderstood the tweet and began suggesting Webtoons they wanted WIT to adapt, in the comments.

However, the update on WIT’s official website doesn’t talk about creating an anime adaptation for any webtoon. Instead, the post suggests that the studio is interested in creating its own web comic, indicating its interest to enter into the Webtoon market.

WIT Studio’s plan regarding Webtoons seems to be long term, as they are looking to hire personnel on a permanent basis, who are willing to work closely with the core team and collaborate on production. The job would include various aspects of Webtoon (comic) production, including placing orders and managing materials for “drawing and finishing”.

Webtoons are a type of digital comic that originated in South Korea usually meant to be read on smartphones.

WIT is not the only first Japanese anime-manga company to be inspired by the recent success of Webtoons. In his interview, Yūta Momiyama, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of “Shonen Jump +”, who handles MANGA plus, explained that the reason they launched MANGA plus was to create a service similar to Korean Webtoons.

“The number of Korean WEBTOON users is increasing significantly on the Internet. It has spread not only to Asia but also to North America and Europe. I am also aware of this,” Momiyama said.

If the Webtoon plan works out, it will be first time WIT Studio, known for producing anime, will be involved in the creation of an original comic (Manga or Webtoon).

The studio is currently working on the anime-original movie Bubble, which is set to release in Japan on May 13, 2022. The movie will begin streaming on Netflix Japan from Thursday, April 28, 2022. The studio was also involved in animating Tatsuya Endo’s spy thriller manga, SPYxFAMILY, along with CloverWorks. The anime is set to release in Japan on April 2022.

WIT Studio is well recognized in the anime industry, for its unique brand of animation. It has works like Attack on Titan and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress under its belt.
