Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense used a quote from One Piece‘s protagonist Monkey D. Luffy in their tweet detailing the losses faced by Russian occupiers in the ongoing war.

The data states that over 59,000 personnel from the enemy side have been eliminated. It also put out the number of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery etc that were taken down by the Ukrainian forces.

One Piece fans were clearly surprised by the reference, however, they likened Ukraine’s current situation to that of Luffy’s when he was facing an emperor of the Sea.

This isn’t the first time that Ukrainian Ministry of Defense made an anime or manga reference in their tweet. They had previously used a modified illustration of Chainsaw Man‘s Volume 1 cover to highlight the use of HIMARS in its efforts against Russia.

In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of war between the two countries.
