Anime distribution giant TOHO Animation announced on April 12, 2022, that sales in the animation production business almost doubled to 26,154 million yen (up 103.2%) according to the full-year financial report for the fiscal year ending in February 2022.
The anime titles that contributed to the profits are TV animes such as Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Godzilla SP, Haikyu !!, and the movies My Hero Academia The Movie: World Heroes Mission and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
The company reported that full-year consolidated sales recorded from March 1, 2021, to Feb 28, 2022, were 228,637 million yen, 19% higher than the previous year.
Toho also reported an operating income of 39,948 million yen (up 78.0%) and ordinary income of 42,790 million yen (up 76.9%). The company’s net income for the period was 29,586,800,000 yen (up 101.3%).
Even though sales and profits declined due to the impact of the new corona disaster in 2021, the profits recovered in FY02 / 22 because of the increase in the number of works and the big hit of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie.
In fact, in the theatre business, although some titles and performances were cancelled or refunded during the period, a significant increase in profits were secured due to an increase in the number of hits compared to the same period of the previous year.
In addition, “Toho Vision 2032 Toho Group Management Strategy” announced on Wednesday that one of their goals for the project will be to add “animation business” as the 4th pillar along with “movie business,” “drama business,” and “real estate business.”
Toho Animation is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year preparing lots of projects including opening a portal site, exhibitions, a one-year special screening event by TOHO animation x TOHO Cinemas and a special website has been opened to announce all special events and campaign information surrounding Toho’s 10th Anniversary Project.
