Toei’s Records Highest Earning In A Year Thanks To One Piece & Dragon Ball

Toei’s earnings are predicted to skyrocket more after the release of The First Slam Dunk movie.

Toei Animation, one of the biggest animation company in Japan has earned 76 billion yen since October 2021 to October 2022.

The company’s sales were raised from 36.7 billion yen to 42.4 billion yen in second quarter. For the second quarter, operating profit was raised from 9.1 billion yen to 14.1 billion yen, recurring profit from 9.8 billion yen to 15.5 billion yen, and net income of 7 billion yen, a significant increase of 55% to 64% over the previous forecast.

For the entire year, the company raised its operating profit forecast from 18.3 billion yen to 23.5 billion yen, ordinary profit from 18.9 billion yen to 25.0 billion yen, and net income from 13.5 billion yen to 18 billion yen.

The main reason for this amazing performance is due to Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and ONE PIECE FILM RED. Both the movies were released in the second quarter.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero earned 2.5 billion yen at the domestic box office and earned more than 20 million USD at the North American box office.

Whereas, ONE PIECE FILM RED was No. 1 for 11 consecutive weeks in the domestic weekend box office ranking and exceeded 17.1 billion yen by October 16 and is still going strong.

Furthermore, sales of merchandising rights, game rights, and distribution rights in Japan and overseas, which were developed in conjunction with the film, exceeded initial forecasts.

Toei’s earnings are predicted to skyrocket more after the release of The First Slam Dunk movie.

The movie although ranks the 11th highest earning movie in Japan it is only behind 5 anime movies in claiming the number 1 anime movie spot.

The five highest-earning anime films above One Piece Film Red on the list are:

  2. Spirited Away at #2
  3. Your name. at #5
  4. Princess Mononoke at #7
  5. Howl’s Moving Castle at #8

The movie opened in Japan on Aug 6, 2022, collecting over 2 billion yen in its first weekend.

PVR Cinemas announced on Aug 26 that they will release the movie in Indian theatres on October 7, 2022.

On Aug 11, PVR cinemas placed standees across multiple theatres in Mumbai revealing that One Piece Film Red will release in India in October 2022.

Crunchyroll has announced on their official website on Sep 12, 2022, that they will be bringing One Piece Red Film to theatres in U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand this November.

The release dates for the regions are as follows:

  • Australia: Nov 3, 2022
  • New Zealand: Nov 3, 2022
  • United States: Nov 4, 2022
  • Canada: Nov 4, 2022

Goro Taniguchi returns to the franchise for the first time since 1998 to direct One Piece Film: Red. Tsutomu Kuroiwa will be in charge of the screenplay. TOEI Animation is animating the film with original author Eiichiro Oda serving as executive producer.
