The Tatami Time Machine Blues The Movie directed by Shingo Natsume & produced by Science SARU has won the Hochi Film Awards in the best theatrical animation film category on November 30, 2022.

The movie was released in Japan in 2022. The Hochi Newspaper announced the awards for Hochi Film Awards on November 30, 2022.

Along with Tatami Time Machine Blues 10 other movies were nominated in the category. The other nominated films were, “The Deer King: Yuna and the Journey of a Promise”, “Anne Frank and the Diary of a Traveler”, “Detective Conan: Bride of Halloween”, “The Dog King”, “One Piece Film Red”, “Tunnel to Summer, Goodbye Exit”, “Drifting Apartment Complex that Tells Rain”, ” Bad Guys”, and “Suzume no Tojimari

The Hochi Newspaper Award was established in 1976 however the animation category was added recently in 2017.

Tatami Time Machine Blues anime was released on the Disney+ streaming platform on Nov 9, 2022.

The anime had also hit the Disney+ Hotstar platform in India on Sep 14, 2022. 

The anime ran for 6 episodes, with episode 5 and 6 to release simultaneously on the same day, Oct 12, 2022. The sixth episode will be an anime only original and will only be streamed on Disney+.

Shingo Natsume (One-Punch Man, Space Dandy, Sonny Boy) is directing the anime at Science SARU, and Makoto Ueda returns as the scriptwriter from The Tatami Galaxy. Yūsuke Nakamura also returns as character designer.

The novel Tatami Time Machine Blues, sequel to The Tatami Galaxy, was published by KADOKAWA in July 2020 as a collaboration work between Morimi’s The Tatami Galaxy novel and Makoto Ueda’s Summertime Machine Blues stage play. It is a story about the characters of The Tatami Galaxy going back and forth in the world of Summertime Machine Blues.

Disney+ describes the plot of the anime as:

It is August 12th. After the remote control to his boarding house’s only air conditioning unit is inadvertently destroyed by spilled cola, “I” devises a plan to return to yesterday in a time machine to recover the remote before it breaks. However, his prankster friend Ozu cannot resist playing with past events, even if it means bringing the universe to the brink of destruction. Now “I” finds himself racing through time to avoid disaster.
