The staff also let us into their thought process as to how they came up with the idea for Future Kid Takara.

According to the staff, they’ve always felt that “days with abnormal weather are becoming more and more frequent in summer”. Yet they went about doing their animation as usual.

When commuting to the studio in the last couple years, we’ve felt that days with abnormal weather are becoming more and more frequent. Temperatures of over 35°C seem to stretch on, making summer a tremendous pain, while unpredictable cloudbursts, which never used to happen in Japan, are relatively common. Across Japan, heavy rains and tropical storms cause major flooding nearly every year, with several homes being swept away each time.

One of us remembers watching a TV show that said if we pass over a certain tipping point by 2025, there’s likely no going back. If the Earth’s permafrost melts, terrifying events will follow. Meanwhile, we’ve just continued making animation as usual.

The staff wants to bring awareness on the planetary crisis using the form of animation as a last ray of hope for the people.

We want to make sure that a world that has succumbed to irreversible, terrifying climate change is only realized in animation. We’ve challenged ourselves to tell the story of Takara, a hero who lives in a world of climate disaster, a world which has passed the border line…

Being an independent studio, STUDIO 4ºC, has started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to help fund a 15 second pilot clip for the film.

They also mentioned that after the campaign ends, the studio will gather all the fans that helped with the funding and create a community where they will update the fans on the film’s progress.
