Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle: Part 1 Akaza’s Return has officially surpassed Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away at the Japanese box office, ending the Studio Ghibli classic’s reign as the country’s second-highest-grossing film of all time.
The latest Demon Slayer movie earned 33.05 billion yen (~$224 million) in just 60 days of release, drawing more than 23 million moviegoers nationwide.
The milestone places it behind Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (40.75 billion yen), which remains Japan’s all-time No. 1.
The record-breaking run comes amid a wave of international success. In North America, the film debuted on Sep 12 with a $70 million opening weekend, the highest ever for a Japanese anime release in the region.
The film also opened in other overseas territories in September, where it has also reported strong box office numbers and record-setting performances.
Worldwide, the movie has already collected 68 billion yen ($468 million) with a global audience of more than 55 million viewers.
In Japan, the film surpassed 5.52 billion yen in its first three days since its release on July 18, setting new records for opening day, opening weekend, and single-day earnings. It reached 10 billion yen in eight days (compared to 10 days for Mugen Train), 20 billion yen in 23 days (24 days for Mugen Train), and 30 billion yen in 46 days (59 days for Mugen Train).
The Infinity Castle Arc is one of the final and most action-packed sagas in the Demon Slayer story. It follows the Demon Slayer Corps as they launch their final, all-out assault on the constantly shifting fortress of their ultimate nemesis, Muzan Kibutsuji, and his remaining Upper-Rank demons.
