Shun Umezawa’s The Darwin Incident Manga Gets Anime Adaptation


In an exciting update, it has been revealed that Shun Umezawa’s The Darwin Incident manga will be getting an anime adaptation. This news was confirmed on the cover of the upcoming Monthly Afternoon issue #7/2024.

Further details about the anime adaptation, such as the animation studio and release date, are yet to be revealed.

The Darwin Incident is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shun Umezawa. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon since June 2020.

In 2022, The Darwin Incident won the 15th Manga Taishō, as well as the Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. The manga was also awarded the French 17th ACBD’s Prize “Asie de la Critique” in 2023.

Kodansha describes the plot of the manga as:

The Animal Liberation Alliance, an eco-terrorist organization, rescues a pregnant chimpanzee from an animal testing lab—only for it to give birth to a half-human, half-chimpanzee “humanzee” named Charlie! Fifteen years later, Charlie’s human foster parents are finally ready to send him to a normal high school, where he makes his first friend: a human girl named Lucy. In the meantime, however, the ALA’s stance has become ever more extreme, and now they’re here to drag Charlie into their terrorist plot…
