Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump editorial department announced a significant revision to its minimum manuscript fees on Nov 18, 2024, marking a notable step toward improving the working environment for creators.

The updated rates will apply to serialized and one-shot works published in the magazine starting November 2024.

In a statement shared on the magazine’s official X account, the editorial team explained that the increase in fees was determined based on profits generated from magazine sales, both print and digital.

The new minimum manuscript fees have been set at 20,900 yen per page for monochrome works and 31,350 yen per page for color works. This represents a rise from the previous rates of 18,700 yen for monochrome and 28,050 yen for color.

For first-time submissions by new creators, the initial manuscript fee will be 20,900 yen.

It was also revealed that if competitors offer higher rates, decisions will be made in consultation with the editorial department.

Additionally, the roles of original story creation and illustration will have their fee allocations determined through discussion between the creators.

Creators working on first-time serializations will also receive a preparation allowance of 500,000 yen.

The department confirmed that manuscript fees will increase annually for series that continue beyond their debut year.

The editorial department also clarified that the one-year exclusive contract traditionally offered at the start of serialization is now optional. “It is not something that must necessarily be agreed upon,” the department emphasized, providing creators with more flexibility.

The announcement also outlined the updated fees for Jump GIGA. The minimum manuscript fees for this publication are now set at 13,200 yen per page for monochrome works and 19,800 yen for color pages.
