Voice actress Arryn Zech (Blake Belladonna) revealed in her Twitter account on Friday, March 25, 2022, that after knowing that scriptwriter Tow Ubukata is part of the upcoming studio SHAFT anime RWBY: Ice Queendom she feels “uncomfortable & very conflicted”.

Due to her history as a survivor of domestic abuse, she expressed that she “made her concerns [about Ubukata] known”.

She said, “I just was informed of very upsetting news regarding the writer for the RWBY anime. As a survivor of abuse, I’m feeling uncomfortable & very conflicted. I’ve made my concerns known. I don’t have any other response to this at this time, I need to process and step away right now.”

In response to Zech’s tweet, Ubukata replied in English that even though he was accused of domestic abuse in the past, later he was proven to be “innocent” and he doesn’t want the incident to resurface.

He also stated that despite the differences with his ex-wife, he has maintained a friendly relationship with her and their kids.

On Aug 21, 2021, around 7:00 p.m., Ubukata allegedly hit his wife’s face in their Tokyo apartment, breaking her front tooth. “It’s true that we quarreled, but I did not hit her,” Ubukata said, denying the charges.

On Aug 24, Shibuya police arrested Ubukata on suspicion of domestic violence against his wife and spent 9 days in jail. According to the police, Ubukata’s wife claimed that he hit her on the jaw and around her mouth.

The writer wrote a memoir about the experience and it was published in a Japanese magazine titled “9 Days Trapped”.

RWBY (pronounced “Ruby”) is an American anime-influenced adult computer-animated web series created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. The animated series is set to premiere this year during summer.

The direction of the series is undertaken by Toshimasa Suzuki of Lagrange-The Flower of Rin-ne and The Price of Smiles fame, and Kenjiro Okada of Sangatsu no Lion will be the chief director.

The conceptualization of anime will be done by Gen Urobuchi, who is known for his work in Puella Magi Madoka, Fate/Zero Novels, Psycho Pass, etc; with huke of Black Rock & Steins:Gate fame conceptualizing the character designs.

Nobuhiro Sugiyama (Ef: A Tale of Memories, Arakawa Under the Bridge, March Comes In Like A Lion) will spearhead the designing of characters for animation and will also serve as the Chief Animation Director along with Yoshiaki Ito and Hiroki Yamamura.

The visual direction aspect rests with Nobuyuki Takeuchi (Maria Holic, Bakemonogatari) while Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi will be composing the music. In addition, Tow Ubukata will be writing and supervising the scripts.

The story is set in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (called “Huntsmen” and “Huntresses”) to protect their world from monsters called Grimm.
