Robert Pattinson has revealed that anime played a role in shaping his performance in Mickey 17, the upcoming sci-fi thriller directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho.

While speaking to the media as part of the film’s promotions, Pattinson acknowledged that certain elements of anime influenced his acting approach.

I was definitely getting some references from anime. Just in the kind of discordant mood changes.

He elaborated further, specifically pointing to the character of Mickey 18.

“Especially for Mickey 18, where you just kind of go from zero to 100 incredibly quickly. I always really like that in anime when you just suddenly have someone entirely static, and suddenly they’re furious out of nowhere. I think I was trying to do some kind of emulation of that, I guess.

Robert Pattinson had recently voiced Heron in the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning The Boy And The Heron anime.

Mickey 17 marks Bong Joon Ho’s first feature film since his critically acclaimed Parasite.

Based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, it premiered at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival on Feb 15, 2025, before being theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures in South Korea on Feb 28, 2025, and later in the United States on March 7.
