Rinnegan is one of the most important Dojutsus in the Naruto Universe. It is an integral part of both, the series’ power system and its lore. Due to its importance, there is a lot to know about the Rinnegan! Hence, we decided to make a complete Rinnegan guide for both Naruto and Boruto fans!

In this guide, we’ll go through everything: The origins of the dojutsu, how to activate it, known users, patterns, and everything else you would want to know! So without wasting any time, let’s get right into it!

What is the Rinnegan? Meaning Explained!

The Rinnegan is the noblest of the “Three Great Dojutsu” alongside the Byakugan and the Sharingan. Jiraiya stated that when the world becomes corrupt enough to leave no hope; the Sage of Six Paths blesses a person with the Rinnegan from heaven. 

While this is merely guesswork based on what Jiraiya had heard, Rinnegan’s background does correspond to it to some extent. The possessor of the eye has the ability to transform into a god. It is up to them, whether they become a God of creation or destruction. The Rinnegan was initially awakened by Kaguya Otsutsuki.

Meaning of the Rinnegan Eye Pattern: 

The concentric pattern of the eye and “Rinne” in the dojutsu stands for Samsara; which means continuous flow of life. That is birth, life, death, and reincarnation which Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, and various other religions believe. 

The names of Jutsus, dojutsus, and concepts in Naruto take influence from numerous Religions and mythologies! Although none of the concepts in Naruto follows the “original” concepts strictly. It simply derives inspiration from them.

Coming back to the Rinnegan, the eye symbolizes control over the Samsara cycle. The powers of the Rinnegan (listed in the article) grant certain powers to its users. These powers allow them to master all abilities and to certain extent control life and death.  

This ties in with Jiraiya’s remarks on the Rinnegan. As previously established, Jiraiya claimed that a person is bestowed with the Rinnegan during dark times.

This makes sense because Hagoromo awoke the Rinnegan while fighting his mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki. Madara awoke it when he resolved to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi to bring peace. Nagato and Obito used it for the same reason.

Finally, Sasuke awakened the Rinnegan to stop Madara, since the latter’s idea of peace was not ideal; or rather it took away the part which made people realize they exist. Whatever may be the reason; the Rinnegan has proved to bless people with powers capable to change the course of the world in desperate times.

Moving ahead, There are variations to the Rinnegan eye as well, they are as follows!

Rinnegan Designs: 

While all the variations are fairly simple, they do strike an impression! They are: 

Original Rinnegan: The original dojutsu has a fairly simple design! It has a purple color with concentric circles covering the eyeball. 

Sasuke’s Rinnegan: Sasuke’s Rinnegan adds three tomoe to two of the innermost circles of the original Rinnegan. 

Momoshiki’s Rinnegan: Momoshiki’s Rinnegan is the same as the original Rinnegan with just one change; Momoshiki’s Rinnegan is red in color. Wait! There’s another stage of Momoshiki’s Rinnegan! After consuming Kinshiki, Momoshiki’s Rinnegan turns Yellow in the anime! 

Rinne-Sharingan: The Rinne Sharingan is the predecessor of the Rinnegan and the Sharingan. Red in color, the Rinne Sharingan has nine tomoes spread throughout its concentric pattern. The Rinne Sharingan is rarer than the Rinnegan itself. Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Ten-Tails, and Madara Uchiha are the only known wielders of this Dojutsu. 

Does Rinnegan have tomoe? 

Yes, a few of the Rinnegans have tomoes in them, namely Sasuke and Kara’s Ten-Tails. . However, they are not to be confused with Rinne Sharingan.

Rinne Sharingan is the predecessor of the Rinnegan and the Sharingan, according to Databook 4. The same Databook states that Sasuke wields the Rinnegan.

Can rinnegan evolve?

While the Rinne Sharingan is the predecessor of the Rinnegan in terms of lore; it certainly acts as an evolution of the Dojutsu!

There is only one dojutsu that has all the powers of a Rinnegan and more, the Rinne-Sharingan. It allows the user to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Until now, only Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Ten-Tails, and Madara have awakened it!

Is rinnegan related to Uchihas?

Yes, definitely. The Rinnegan and the Uchihas are tied by fate. This is because the Uchihas are the direct descendants of the Otsutsukis.

All of this starts with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, who taught Ninshu to his sons. Indra, the older child, was a prodigy. Whereas, Asura, the younger one persevered and learned through hard work.

When nearing his death, Hagoromo named Asura, the younger one, as the leader. This led to a clash between the brothers. To prevent this from happening again, Hagoromo created the Uchiha Stone Tablet. As you may have guessed, the Uchiha’s are the direct descendants of Indra while the Senju are of Asura. 

The Uchiha Stone Tablet that Hagoromo created was only partially understandable using a Sharingan. However, a Rinnegan wielder could read it completely and understand the true history. This was the last key to end the clash between the Indra and Asura reincarnations.

Awakening the Rinnegan is the fate of the chosen ones and being an Uchiha is the first criterion. And, Black Zetsu capitalized on this. He altered the Uchiha Stone Tablet and manipulated Madara into awakening the Rinnegan.

He did so by making it seem like the Rinnegan was the answer to what he sought. Then, he got Madara to fight against Hashirama (Asura’s reincarnation at the time) and then eventually brought back Kaguya. 

How to Get the Rinnegan? 

Awakening the Rinnegan is quite forward! All you need to do is create the Sage of Six Paths’ Chakra.  

There are two main ways of awakening the Rinnegan. The first is to gain the Sage of Six Paths’ Chakra directly! Or, you could combine the Senju and Uchiha Clan’s chakra! You need to be an Uchiha since Rinnegan is the evolved form of Sharingan, or you could just steal it. 

Madara was the first Indra reincarnation to awaken the Rinnegan and he did so by using Hashirama’s cells.

While it sounds super easy to do, it isn’t. Madara did this at a fairly young age, he was in his 30s at max. Yet, he only awakened the Rinnegan when he was nearing his natural death. 

Sasuke awakened the Rinnegan through the other way. He received Hagoromo’s chakra during the 4th Great Ninja War. While these are the best ways to obtain the Rinnegan, you can borrow it too; like Nagato and Obito.  

So, can anybody awaken the Rinnegan?

The simple answer is no, they cannot. Rinnegan is a dojutsu belonging to the Sage of Six Paths, only a few chosen ones can even dream of awakening it. So far, there are only two humans who have awakened it; namely, Madara and Sasuke Uchiha.

As stated above, awakening the Rinnegan is the fate of a few select Uchihas. Even if a normal person used the same method as Madara to awaken the Rinnegan, it’s almost guaranteed to not work.

We mentioned that Madara combined Indra and Asura’s chakra to awaken the Rinnegan. Hence, it is only natural to wonder “what if an unrelated person combined Indra and Asura’s chakra?”

Well, the answer might or might not be what you expect it to be.

According to us, nothing will happen. Why? Let’s understand this with an example.

To make this easier to understand, we’ll go with Danzo, someone who is a non-Uchiha and a non-Senju. He had both the Sharingan and Hashirama’s cells.

However, he never awakened the Rinnegan. The biggest problem here would be the fact that while Danzo has the Sharingan, he DOES NOT have Madara’s Sharingan i.e Indra’s Chakra. So, let’s assume that Danzo has Madara’s Sharingan as well.

This way, Danzo has three types of chakra in him. A: his own chakra, B: Hashirama’s chakra (through Hashirama’s cells), C: Madara’s Chakra (through Madara’s Sharingan). Now, he finally qualifies according to the basic criteria for awakening the Rinnegan.

Still, Danzo CANNOT awaken the Rinnegan. Or, there’s at least a 99.99% chance that he won’t. Why?

Well, it falls down to compatibility. It is possible that Danzo’s body might not react well with two unknown forms of chakra inside it alongside its own chakra.

Danzo himself said that it was extremely difficult to control Hashirama’s chakra and that it would constantly try to eat him. Hence, having Madara’s chakra in the mix might make controlling the two chakras even worse.

Furthermore, this body is not pure. It is a mixture of Senju, Uchiha, and some other chakra.

It is essential to have Indra and Asura’s chakra to awaken the dojutsu, which is fulfilled here. But, there’s a chance that Danzo’s personal chakra will interfere in the process of creating the Sage of Six Paths’ chakra.

Also, Danzo barely has any control over the two new chakras inside his body. Hence, there’s only a one in a billion chance that he might awaken the Rinnegan.

This is further supported by looking at the history of Rinnegan. There have been only four (4) humans who have used the Rinnegan.

Namely, they are Madara Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, Nagato Uzumaki and Obito Uchiha. Here, you can clearly see that all four of these are closely related to Indra and Asura.

Uchiha Clan is the home of Indra reincarnations, and the Uzumaki clan is a close relative of the Senju Clan.

Senju and Uzumaki, both of them have had Asura’s reincarnations. Even with such heavy lineage, Nagato and Obito used Madara’s Rinnegan because it wasn’t possible for them to awaken it themselves.

Hence, an outsider can only hope to awaken the Rinnegan in a parallel universe.

Known Rinnegan Users: 

1) Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki: 

Also known as the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo is the first person to have activated the Rinnegan.

He is one of the strongest beings in the Narutoverse. Hagoromo sealed Kaguya Otsutsuki alongside his brother Hamura and created Ninshu.

He can use all the Six Paths, Creation of all things, and also travelled through ages as a spirit.

Although, these abilities are just scratching the surface of his vast arsenal of powers.

2) Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki: 

Momoshiki was sent by the Otsutsuki family. His objective was to learn about the whereabouts of Kaguya and extract the chakra fruit from Earth!

It is of no surprise that Momoshiki Otsutsuki scales above the Progenitor of Chakra herself! However, this is debatable as Kaguya reaped the Divine Fruit several times and during the 4th Ninja War maximum of her chakra was inside Naruto.

3) Ten-Tails:

The Ten-Tails is the combined form of Kaguya Otsutsuki and The God Tree. Capable of causing mass destruction, it was brought into existence by Kaguya to gain her chakra back from her sons. The Tailed Beast can subdue all the Nine Tailed Beasts

4) Black Zetsu: 

Born to carry on Kaguya’s will using Yin-Yang Release, Black Zetsu possesses the Rinnegan as well. While it may not be super strong, it is a sly being who manipulated Madara as the Master of Puppets. 

5) Madara Uchiha: 

An incarnation of Indra Otsutsuki, Madara went toe-to-toe with Hashirama Senju, but even that wasn’t enough. After he awakened the Rinnegan at a near-death state, Madara started to execute his plan to launch the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

However, he still had the Rinnegan thanks to Kabuto but not at full strength. After breaking free from the Edo Tensei Jutsu, he unleashed hell on the world and even awakened the Rinne-Sharingan! 

6) Nagato Uzumaki: 

Nagato was the first to receive Madara’s Rinnegan. Madara planted the Rinnegan in Nagato at an early age since he belonged to the Uzumaki Clan without Nagato’s knowing.

He chose Nagato since Uzumaki are close to the Senju Clan by blood!

7) Obito Uchiha: 

Scouted and thrown into the depths of hell by Madara, Obito lived his life after “dying” as Madara Uchiha; who was planning to launch the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He took Nagato’s Rinnegan after Pain’s death and declared the 4th Shinobi War.

With the Rinnegan; he absorbed the first seven Tailed Beasts and used some of the extracted chakras of the last two beasts; later becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. 

8) Sasuke Uchiha: 

The lone survivor of the Uchiha Clan found himself losing against Madara Uchiha, with a sword piercing his chest. In this critical moment, The Sage of Six Path, Hagoromo Otsutsuki managed to pay a visit to Sasuke and Naruto.

He explained the history of Ninjas and the Otsutsuki to the two and granted them his powers. Naruto, the reincarnation of Asura gained the physical powers of Hagoromo (SOSP Mode. Truth Seeker Balls, etc) and Sasuke gained the Rinnegan!

This way, Sasuke was able to see Madara’s limbos. He was able to fight on par with the likes of Kaguya(weakened) and Momoshiki Otsutsuki as well!

Rinnegan Abilities/Powers:

The basic abilities granted to all Rinnegan wielders are listed below!

1) See Chakra Flow: 

Like the Byakugan, the Rinnegan can see a person’s chakra flow in detail and also see through invisible walls/barriers. Madara used this ability to try to grasp Might Guy’s condition and predict his attacks. This power can scale differently for Otsutsukis.

For example, Kaguya could see different types of chakras in different colours. And, Momoshiki’s Byakugan allowed him to foresee the fate of people.

This is a very handy ability for both psychological and combat warfare.

2) Mastery of all changes of Nature and Jutsu:

The Rinnegan grants its wielder the ability to master all five basic nature transformations. It also allows them to learn any jutsu with ease!

Only a handful of Shinobis in history were able to master all five basic nature transformations without the Rinnegan. A prime example would be the Third Hokage, Hirzuen Sarutobi!

This ability allows the user to become more versatile in battle; causing the opponent to always be tense as they don’t know what could attack them next!

3) Ability to decipher the Sage of Six Paths’ Tablet: 

The Sage of Six Paths’ Stone Tablet is arguably the oldest relic in shinobi history; which also proves the existence of Hagoromo Otsutsuki for many.

Also, it can only be read using the Rinnegan.

Hagoromo made the tablet using Rinnegan. It is an important part of the shinobi history that explains the conflict between Indra, Asura and their reincarnations.

4) The Six Paths Technique: 

The Rinnegan grants its user the ability to use the Six Paths Technique. Despite its name, the technique gives 7 different Jutsus/Paths to the user. They are: 

Deva Path: The Deva Path grants the user the ability to use attractive/repulsive forces on objects and people. Yes, this is Pain’s most iconic ability which flattened the Konoha village in seconds.

However, the ability cannot attack in succession. The cooldown of the ability depends on the scale of the technique used. The minimum cooldown is of 5 seconds and it can last for several minutes!

It also allows the user to use Chibaku Tensei, which Pain used against Naruto. 

Asura Path: The Asura Path allows the user to transform parts of their body into mechanical weapons to attack.

It can attack using missiles, chainsaws, cannons, extra limbs, etc.

Example: Nagato channelled the Asura Path using a Ninja puppeteer; who also dealt the last blow to Jiraiya.

Human Path: The Human Path allows the user to read the mind of a target. The user can extract the victim’s soul by placing their hand on the head or chest of the target too.

The target’s death is inevitable even if the user does not intend to extract their soul. While it is an amazing ability, it does not provide much utility in an actual battle.

Example: Pain used it to kill countless shinobis during the Pain Assault Arc, including Shizune. 

Animal Path: The Animal Path allows the user to summon various animals to aid in battle.

The Path allows the user to summon the creatures without any blood sacrifice and hand seals! It also allows the user to summon people through the path using hand seals!

What really differentiates the Human Path from normal Summoning Jutsu is the fact that the creatures summoned are immortal!

These summons played a major role in Pain’s strategy; as they were strong enough to take care of most of their enemies. Even if they weren’t strong enough to take the enemy down, they played a significant role in wearing them down. 

Creatures summoned through the Animal Path are as follows:

1.Giant Drill-Beaked Bird: 

It is a giant bird with a massive beak that can fly and attack at high speeds.

2.Giant multi-headed Dog:

A super strong and huge multi-headed dog with wings who can split into individual dogs when hit; it is said that this summons can only be defeated by defeating the summoner itself!

3.Giant Snake-Tailed Chameleon: 

Much like a real-life chameleon, this summon can blend in with its surroundings; allowing its summoner to attack out of nowhere. It can also safeguard its user by keeping them inside their mouth.

The snake tail works as an additional limb as well, which can capture intended targets. 

4.Giant Panda:

The Giant Panda, as the name suggests, is a Giant Panda. Its main purpose is to protect the user from an attack. Pain used the Giant Panda to fend off Sage Mode Jiraiya’s Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon Jutsu. 

5.Giant Ox:

The Giant Ox is capable of causing a lot of destruction purely because of its huge size. However, it isn’t considered to be smart. 

6.Giant Rhino:

Like the Giant Ox, the Giant Rhino possesses destructive strength due to its size and charging capabilities. 

7.Giant Crustacean:

The Giant Crustacean is a durable attacker due to its Armor. It also uses Jutsus like the Water Release: Wild Bubble Wave Jutsu. 

8.Giant Centipede:

It has a hard and durable body since it could destroy buildings using its body. We don’t know much about it since it never played a significant role.

Preta Path:

The Preta Path allows the user to absorb Chakra in any form. The user can absorb Chakra from any part of their body, making it an ultimate defence technique.

It can absorb all forms of chakra, even Senjutsu. However, the user faces the risk of turning into stone by absorbing too much Senjutsu chakra as well! 

Naraka Path:

Naraka Path allows the user to summon the King of Hell. The King of Hell is a deity who rules over life and death. This deity grants two powers to the user; namely the power of interrogation and restoration.

Interrogation:

When the user catches hold of the target and asks questions; the King of Hell emerges behind the user with dark flames surrounding it. Arms come out from the deity’s mouth and it grips the target’s life force. Then, it passes its judgement. If the target lies or refuses to answer, then their life force is snatched from them. However, if one answers truthfully, they are spared but left in an extremely over-exhausted condition. 

Restoration:

The Naraka Path allows the user to repair any form of damage. To do so, the user summons the King of Hell and lets it ingest the target with its arms. After some time, the target comes out of the deity’s mouth in perfect condition. 

This makes Naraka Path the biggest asset of the Rinnegan; especially when working in teams (Like the Six Paths of Pain) as the members can be rejuvenated again and again! 

Outer Path:

The Outer Path’s greatest gift is that it grants the user control over life and death. Yes, the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu.

As you may know, this Jutsu allows the user to revive a person. However, the user’s death is inevitable due to the after-effects of using the Jutsu.

Other than that, the Outer Path allows the user to create the Black Chakra Receivers. These have been used extensively since the Pain Assault Arc.

It also allows the user to use the Chakra Chains of the Gedo Statue. These chains are used to subdue the nine Tailed-Beasts! 

5) Summoning the Gedo Statue:

The Rinnegan allows the user to break the seal on the Gedo Statue and summon it as well.

The Gedo Statue is the remaining husk of Ten-Tails after its chakra was extracted and split into the nine Tailed-Beasts. Then, Hagoromo sealed it off inside the moon.

However, as stated above, the Rinnegan allows the user to summon it back to Earth!

The Gedo Statue can absorb anybody’s chakra in an instant and can house all of the nine Tailed-Beasts.

It also possesses Chains with cursed seals which can subdue the Tailed-Beasts as Obito and Madara did.

6) Individual Abilities:

The Rinnegan also imparts all of its users with abilities exclusive to that particular user. These abilities are as follows: 

Limbo:

Madara could create “Limbos”, i.e. Shadows of himself in an invisible world that coexists with the “original/real” world.

This world is impossible to see/sense unless one has the Rinnegan or the Sage of Six Paths chakra. These Limbos are as strong as Madara and can be damaged only by using “Six Paths Senjutsu” attacks.

Since they’re as strong as Madara, only someone on the same level as Naruto and Sasuke can stop them.

Amenotejikara and Portals:

Sasuke’s Rinnegan grants him an ability called “Amenotejikara”. This ability allows him to switch places with people and objects in a specific range (in meters).

Amenotejikara is a huge part of Sasuke’s arsenal as it is a great surprise tool. It allows him to escape a trap and throw his enemies into them! 

The Rinnegan also lets Sasuke open space-time portals, allowing him to travel through dimensions; which is essential against Otsutsukis since the latter could trap their opponents in different dimensions!

Chakra Absorption:

Although all Rinnegan users can absorb chakra; Momoshiki Otsutsuki absorbs chakra using his Rinnegan on his right hand. He then amplifies and releases it using the Rinnegan on his left hand.

Moreover, the dojutsu also allows him to convert any living being into edibles!

These can be considered to be small fractions of the Chakra Fruit in a sense. Momoshiki used this ability on his companion Kinshiki. 

Does Naruto get the Rinnegan? 

Okay, this question might piss off a lot of Naruto fans like myself. When I first saw this question, I thought “Who thinks that? Have they never watched Naruto?”

And well, I guess I was right, kind of. Boruto has both attracted a lot of new fans and sent away a lot of Stans too.

It seems like fan arts with Naruto possessing the Rinnegan confuses some fans! The new fans thought that Naruto can use the Rinnegan!

And, some non-Boruto watchers thought that Naruto awakened the Rinnegan in the Boruto Manga! Wow, what a misunderstanding! 

So let me make it clear, It is IMPOSSIBLE for Naruto to awaken the Rinnegan. Well, he can steal it but I highly doubt that it’ll even happen. 

Wait, but according to the “How to Get the Rinnegan?” section above, Naruto should be able to awaken the Rinnegan, right? Well, sadly, he can’t.

Why Can’t Naruto Awaken the Rinnegan?

Even though Naruto is a reincarnation of Asura, and is an Uzumaki, awakening the Rinnegan seems out of bounds for him.

He’ll clear the basic criteria of awakening the Rinnegan easily if he were to take some of Sasuke’s Chakra. In fact, it might work a little better than Hashirama’s cells did for Madara since Sasuke already has the Rinnegan!

However, there are some major complications. First, just bringing Indra and Asura’s chakra inside one’s body won’t create the Rinnegan.

It is a process. It is highly possible that the process might take longer than Naruto’s natural life itself!

However, there is a slight chance that Naruto could awaken the Rinnegan. Naruto has shown to have near 100% compatibility with Hashirama’s cells (i.e. his new right arm) and is an Asura reincarnate.

So his body should react well with Indra’s chakra. So, there’s a chance that Naruto might awaken the Rinnegan when he’s in his 90s or so. But, the Rinnegan will be of almost no use then.

Also, there’s one thing to keep in mind. While this is completely hypothetical, it could be considered as a variable in this situation. Naruto has always been below-average in anything related to Genjutsu or Dojutsu in general.

He naturally isn’t the most compatible with abilities like Genjutsu and more which are usually considered to be attributed to people with dojutsus.

Due to Naruto’s natural incompatibility with such things, there’s a chance that the fusion of the chakra might take even longer.

Please remember that is just a remark; we in no way intend to say that this is why Naruto cannot awaken the Rinnegan.

That topic has been discussed above; treat this as a side note.

In conclusion, there’s a slight chance that Naruto might awaken the Rinnegan since he’s more compatible than Rinnegan users like Nagato and Obito.

However, there’s no concrete proof that shows that Naruto is at least as compatible as Madara.

Hence, the chances of Naruto awakening the Rinnegan is less than 0.1%.

Is Rinnegan the Strongest Dojutsu? 

Let’s make this into two parts. First, we’ll compare the Rinnegan against its two main competitors! 

Rinnegan vs Sharingan vs Byakugan: 

The answer to this question is quite simple, the Rinnegan is far better.

The Byakugan falls in the last place naturally due to its limited scope with only one major ability.

As for the Sharingan, well, Rinnegan is the evolution of the Sharingan for a reason. While the Mangekyou and the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan are amazing and will put one level above almost every shinobi.

It still isn’t enough to defeat the likes of Hashirama, Naruto, Madara and the Otsutsuki.

The abilities listed about the Rinnegan above put one far above the Sharingan’s abilities like Susanoo, Genjutsu, etc.

While Amaterasu, Kamui and Susanoo are amazing abilities, one can retain them and still have the Rinnegan.

But, if we were to put Sharingan against a normal Rinnegan; then the only thing that makes it worth looking at the Sharingan would be the Susanoo.

The Susanoo to has amazing offensive and defensive abilities, enough to destroy most nations

Still, Rinnegan’s techniques are even more supreme, and a Rinnegan user can use the Mangekyo Sharingan’s abilities as well; making it an easy win for the dojutsu.

What about the Rinne Sharingan? 

The Rinne Sharingan reigns supreme, kind of. Well, there aren’t a lot of differences, to be honest.

While one can cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi using the Rinne Sharingan, the Rinnegan can repel the ultimate Genjutsu.

However, one can say that the Rinne Sharingan is stronger since it can capture everybody else into its genjutsu forever.

TL;DR:

The Rinnegan is the strongest out of the “Three Great Dojutsu”. It is said that a chosen one; blessed with the Rinnegan during times of despair will change the world for the better or the worse.
