Naoko Takeuchi‘s Sailor Moon franchise announced on Thursday, April 28, 2022, that series will launch a 2-part movie, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie. It is set to release in Japan in early summer 2023.
A new official website opened and revealed a trailer and visual:
The 2-part film will cover the final “Shadow Galactica” arc of Takeuchi’s original manga. The upcoming Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos is a sequel to the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie.
The main cast of the series will reprise their roles:
- Kotono Mitsuishi as Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino
- Misato Fukuen as Sailor Chibi Moon
- Shizuka Ito as Minako Aino
- Reina Ueda as CereCere
- Kenji Nojima as Mamoru Chiba
- Rina Sato as Rei Hino
- Sayaka Ohara as Michiru Kaio
- Ami Koshimizu as Makoto Kino
Sailor Moon manga author herself is supervising the Cosmos movie. Toei Animation and Studio DEEN will be animating the movies. The main staff includes:

- Character design: Kazuko Tadano
- Music: Yasuharu Takanashi
- Art director: Yumiko Kuga
In addition, Sailor Moon is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the manga and to commemorate the event, the franchise will open a “Sailor Moon Museum” at the Roppongi Museum in Tokyo from July 1 to Dec 30, 2022.
The event will be the largest ever exhibition for the franchise, and will consist of new illustrations drawn by the original author as well as valuable color original drawings from the previous exhibitions.
The Sailor Moon manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1991 to 1997. The anime adaptation by Toei Animation premiered in 1992 and aired until 1997.
In addition to the TV anime, the franchise also spawned a live-action series titled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, multiple movies, OVAs, and specials.
A second anime adaptation Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal started in 2014. It was an adaptation of the manga that followed its storyline more closely. The dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs were adapted in the first two seasons, while the third one covered Death Busters (also known as Infinity) arc. The story continued with Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie, which was released in two parts.
