Pokémon franchise has announced its first ever Japanese live-action drama adaptation based on the game, titled Pack Your Pockets With Adventure (Pocket ni Boken o Tsumekonde), on Aug 30, 2023.

The drama series will start airing on Oct 19, 2023, on TV Tokyo’s “MokuDora 24” time slot.

The lead role will be portrayed by Nanase Nishino, a member of the renowned idol group Nogizaka46, who will play the character named Madoka Akagi.

The plot follows the story of Madoka Akagi, who chases her dream of becoming a creator as she moves to Tokyo. Her life, which was shaped by playing Pokémon games with her sibling in her childhood, takes a new turn after 20 years when she receives a Game Boy Pocket and starts playing “Pocket Monsters Red”.

A few days after I mentioned to my friends that “Someday, I’d like to work on something related to Pokémon,” I received this opportunity, and it truly surprised me. Having played almost every series from the first generation to the latest instalment, I am part of the generation that grew up with Pokémon. So, I’m filled with joy.

The character I play, Madoka Akagi, is someone who takes action on her own and grows by absorbing the influences around her. When I first spoke with the producers, they expressed that they wanted to emphasize “protagonist” rather than “lead,” and I found that idea wonderful. I’m approaching the filming with that mindset.

The Adventure team that Madoka works with is a comfortable and pleasant group. We laugh a lot on set and in the greenroom. While each individual has a strong personality, when we come together, there’s a perfect balance – very reliable! Using Madoka’s words, I would describe them as a “small but elite” group.

As the title suggests, the theme is adventure. So, while keeping an eye on Madoka and her friends as they evolve through their adventures, you can also look forward to little nods that will make those who have played Pokémon think, “Ah, that’s nostalgic,” or “I recognize this!” There are enjoyable little details sprinkled throughout for fans who have experienced the world of Pokémon.

Pack Your Pockets With Adventure is a drama series produced in collaboration between TV Tokyo and The Pokémon Company.
