The legendary mangaka, Osamu Tezuka’s classic Dororo manga has been launched in vertical-scrolling style format for the first time on December 28, 2022. The manga will also be a remake with the old protagonist Hyakkimaru as the lead who will still searching for his lost body parts.
The webcomic transists the setting from feudal Japan to the modern day, where demons and criminals work together in the shadows to control the new form of magic called as science. Hyakkimaru meets with Roro a boy with strong resemblance to Dororo, Hakki’s old travelling companion.
The project was launched in collaboration between Japanese distributor Media Do, Tezuka Production & South Korean comic company Copin Communications.
The webcomic is renamed as Dororo Re:Verse with Lee Do-gyung writing the script and storyboards.
The initial 21 chapters of the webcomic are available on the Piccoma web manga app in Japan and on Kakaopage platform in South Korea.
It will be available for global release especially North America, China, & Europe, post the complete serialization of the manga in South Korea and Japan.
Several key visual and a few production images of the remake version were also released along with the announcement.
Dororo is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by the manga artist Osamu Tezuka. The manga was first serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday between August 1967 and July 1968, before being cancelled. The manga was then concluded in Akita Shoten’s Bōken’ō magazine in 1969.
A 26-episode anime television series adaptation by Mushi Productions aired in 1969. The anime series bears the distinction of being the first entry in what is now known as the World Masterpiece Theater series (Calpis Comic Theater at the time).
Dororo was also made into a live-action film in 2007. A 24-episode second anime television series adaptation by MAPPA and Tezuka Productions aired from January to June 2019.
