Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the horrifying state of war is worsening every minute. Amidst such a massacre, an ardent fan of Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece manga from Kyiv, Ukraine took to Reddit on Thursday, Feb 24, 2022, to express their uncertain situation hanging between life and death.

In his post, the user painted a bleak scenario, expressing fear at the possibility of losing their life to the bombings before seeing the end of One Piece manga. They asked the other fans to remember them when they witness the end of One Piece.

Seeing this, many fellow One Piece “Nakamas” came forward to offer verbal support and help the resident.

Other fans used the example of Usopp, who managed to survive in the face of death even though he was not blessed with any powers, and asked him not to lose hope or give up.

One fan (Blitzoo), despite his modest condition, offered to buy plane tickets for the user. A horde of comments with a similar sentiment started pouring in after user Blitzoo offered to help the Ukrainian.

While, majority of the comments expressed concern and hoped for the user’s safety, there were some who accused the Ukrainian of karma farming and trying to swindle money.

However, the refugee declined the offer saying that they didn’t ask for pity money but just wanted to share their last moments with similar-minded people before going MIA in this chaos.

Furthermore, the user also revealed even if they accepted the money it would be of no use, as the nearby airports have been bombarded trapping all citizens inside the country.

The situation in Ukraine has not gone unnoticed by professionals in the anime and manga industry. Both Shuhei Yabuta, Director of Vinland Saga, and Tite Kubo, the mangaka of Bleach, commented on the situation.

The anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga premiered in 1999. The 100th manga volume shipped on Sept 3, 2021. Oda published the 1,000th chapter in this year’s combined 5th/6th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on Jan 4, 2022.
