EPIC OP MC ANIME - ANIMEHUNCH

Netflix Subpoenas Discord To Hunt Down Person Behind ‘Worst’ Anime Leaks

NEtflix vs Discord

The Northern District of California court has issued a subpoena to Discord, compelling the platform to identify the user allegedly responsible for leaking unreleased episodes and images from various Netflix shows.

The subpoena seeks information on a user with the handle @jacejohns4n, who is believed to have shared copyrighted content from several Netflix productions.

The Discord user reportedly leaked various anime, including Ranma1/2, Dandadan, and Terminator Zero. Other than these shows like Squid Game and Arcane were also leaked.

In an interview published on Telegram, linked to a now-deleted X account associated with the user, they claimed responsibility for what they described as the “worst leak in streaming history.”

A friend of mine worked for a company called iyuno and I somehow got access to their database then I Leaked those shows/movies on 4chan before posting them on Twitter,” they said.

The user also said in the interview that they will continue leaking more movie, and that they are currently planning their next big leak.

Following the incident, all social media profiles associated with @jacejohns4n appear to have been deleted or suspended.

Netflix previously confirmed in August that a post-production partner was compromised, leading to the leaks.

One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online. Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down,” a Netflix representative said at the time.

The compromised partner was later identified as Iyuno, a localization firm based in California. They too released a statement saying that they were investigating the leaks which occurred due to unauthorized access of confidential content.

Clarification (Nov 26, 2024): Iyuno was not involved in the post-production of Squid Game Season 2, and leaks revolving around the show was not connected to them.

Iyuno lists major entertainment companies, including Amazon Studios, BBC, Disney, HBO, and DreamWorks, among its clients.

The leaked anime content included low-resolution episodes and films, featuring watermarks and timestamps, indicating a post-production partner was compromised.

The initially leaked material included episodes 1, 3, and 4 of Ranma 1/2 and the first two episodes of Dandadan.

Subsequent leaks included episodes 3-6 of Dandadan, all episodes of Terminator Zero, and an expanded set of Ranma 1/2 episodes, bringing the total to 12.

This is not the first time Discord has been subpoenaed in an infringement case.

In October, South Korean publisher Nexon filed a subpoena against Discord, alleging noncompliance with several Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notices.

Discord is currently contesting Nexon’s demands in court, calling them “improper and overly burdensome.”

In a statement addressing the Nexon case, a Discord attorney stated, “Discord is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the law, but acting as your copyright assertion partner is not one of them.”

The Netflix subpoena, filed under DMCA laws, does not indicate an attached lawsuit but is part of efforts to identify anonymous users suspected of copyright violations.

Platforms such as Discord, YouTube, and Reddit are often targeted by similar DMCA subpoenas for user information.
