If there is one thing that Mamoru Hosoda fans can look forward to, its the routine of a new movie every three years. This time, the director was a year late, however, the announcement has finally come.
The official X account of Studio Chizu announced on Dec 23, 2024 that Hosoda’s new movie, titled Hateshi naki Scarlet, will release in winter 2025. His previous film, Belle, released in 2021.
Hosoda is handling the scripts and is credited as the creator of the movie.
A teaser visual, which features the titular character Scarlet – a strong princess from a certain kingdom who transcends time and space – was also revealed.

Details about the movie:
At a stage event which was held on the same day to announce the movie, director Hosoda revealed that he will be taking a new approach for the film, as he aims to create “an entirely new aesthetic that is neither 2D animation nor Hollywood-style CGI.”
The director also said that the movie will be different in tone to his previous works, and that it will delve into life and death. He hoped that this would resonate with everyone, calling it the largest theme he had to tackle in his career.
While Hosoda refused to reveal specific details about the movie, he did say that the movie will have elements of action and romance, and will be an entertaining experience.
Toho is handling the distribution of the movie in Japan, with Sony Pictures bagging the distribution rights for overseas audiences. Sony Pictures is also an investor in the film.
