The official Twitter account for Makoto Shinkai‘s feature film,Your Name., announced through a teaser video on Saturday, Dec 11, 2021, that a press conference for his next film will be streamed on the Toho Movie Channel on YouTube on Dec 15 at 11:00 p.m. JST (9:00 a.m. EST).
Shinkai will be in attendance to discuss the specifics of his new project.
Shinkai retweeted the post and commented that he is just reannouncing it because “it seems like a big deal!”
English subtitles will be available for the YouTube video from Dec 16.
Shinkai had revealed in one of his tweets in October that the storyboards for his next feature film were being reviewed.
In an interview with Crunchyroll, the 47-year-old director had said that he would try to look for a different theme for his new movie. According to the director, the theme of his next feature film will be “what happens after the end”, in other words, a post-apocalyptic era.
Weathering With You, Shinkai’s most recent film premiered in Japan in July 2019. The film went on to become Japan’s #7 highest-earning domestic film of all time, as well as the highest-grossing film in 2019.
Shinkai’s Your Name. debuted in Japan in August 2016 and has become the country’s fifth highest-grossing film, the third highest-grossing Japanese film, and the third-highest-grossing anime film.
Shinkai’s other works include 5 Centimeters Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, She and Her Cat, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, The Garden of Words, and Children Who Chase Lost Voices.
