Kinnikuman Manga Gets New Anime Adaptation

Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada’s action comedy manga, Kinnikuman, is getting a new anime adaptation to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original anime.

An official Twitter handle, which was launched as a part of the new anime, revealed a visual featuring Suguru Kinniku or better known by the titular name, Kinnikuman, on March 16, 2023.

Moreover, a 40th anniversary exhibition, named “Super Kinnikuman Exhibition,” will be held at Tokyo Tower from March 18 to April 2, 2023.

The first animated series based on Kinnikuman was produced by Toei Animation and directed by Yasuo Yamayoshi, Takenori Kawada and Tetsuo Imazawa. The 137-episode series was originally broadcast in Japan from April 3, 1983, to Oct 1, 1986.

It was followed by Kinnikuman: Scramble for the Throne, directed by Takeshi Shirato and Atsutoshi Umezawa. This 46-episode series was produced by Toei and aired on Nippon TV from Oct 6, 1991, to Sep 27, 1992.

Kinnikuman is a Japanese manga series created by the duo Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada, known as Yudetamago.

The manga was originally published in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1979 to 1987. It restarted publication in 2011 in Shueisha’s web magazine Shū Play News, and has spawned spin-off manga and anime series, video games, anime films, and several Kinnikuman-related merchandise.

Kinnikuman is a superhero… a bad one. The one day a person named Meat tells Kinnikuman that he is the prince of an alien planet. Kinnikuman must save the day numerous times fighting evil chiyojins and competing in tournaments to prove himself to his family and to gain respect and money.
