Kingdom 2 Overtakes Dragon Ball Super Super Hero In Japanese Box Office

It made 1.3 billion yen in its first 4 days

The second live-action movie of Kingdom franchise based on manga by Yasuhisa Hara of same name, Kingdom 2, has earned 2.2 billion yen in its run of 2 weeks. Thus, overtaking Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero anime movie for the 10th spot as the highest earning Japanese movie on its box office.

Kingdom 2 is the highest earning live action movie of 2022 in Japan. It made 1.3 billion yen in its first 4 days. The movie has had a footfall of 1.55 million until now and is still growing.

In its opening weekend the movie earned 797 million yen which was 151% of its predecessor’s earning. The first movie was the highest grossing live-action film of 2019 in Japan of Japanese origin.

The sequel had a footfall of 527,000 on its first weekend. In addition, the footfall the movie received in its first 4 days was 934,000 and made 168.8% more revenue than its predecessor.

The sequel movie has also received a critical acclaim and ranked no. 1 on Filmarks ranking with 4.01/5.0 based on 4777 reviews.

The first film, Kingdom was released in Japan in April 2019 and grossed 690,219,500 yen (about US$6.17 million) in its first three days, selling 506,861 tickets. The picture later sold a total of 4.11 million tickets for 5,471,938,400 yen (about US$50.42 million), earning a total of 5.73 billion yen (approximately US$53.2 million).

Kingdom is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhisa Hara. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump since January 2006, with its chapters collected in sixty-four tankōbon volumes as of February 2022.

The series was adapted into a three-season anime television series by Studio Pierrot. A fourth season will premiere in April 2022.

As of February 2022, the Kingdom manga had over 87 million copies, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. In 2013, the manga won the Grand Prize of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Kingdom provides a fictionalized account of the Warring States period primarily through the experiences of the war orphan Xin and his comrades as he fights to become the greatest general under the heavens, and in doing so, unifying China for the first time in 500 years

The Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie made 2.21 billion yen in its home run.
