Jujutsu Kaisen anime series has been embroiled in a heated controversy following a social media post by one of its animators, (@bannogawa_b), which some have deemed as a racist gesture towards Asians.
The animator shared a drawing on Twitter on July 6, 2023, featuring characters Satoru Gojo and Shoko Ieiri mocking Suguru Geto using the so-called “fox eyes” gesture.
The illustration quickly gained momentum, with supporters defending the animator’s actions as harmless while others vehemently condemning them as offensive and unacceptable.
However, the tweet has since been deleted following widespread criticism.
In response to the backlash, the Jujutsu Kaisen animator posted another drawing featuring Satoru Gojo apologizing for the alleged racist gesture using a playful phrase, “men-go”, a sarcastic variation of the word “gomen” (sorry).
“I’m sorry, but I deleted the picture I posted before the broadcast, so please forgive me for that.
To those who replied, I apologize for not being able to respond.
Please look forward to the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen! Thank you very much!“
However, this apology was met with further criticism, with some Twitter users finding it insincere and inappropriate.
Ultimately, the animator issued a formal apology, expressing remorse for their actions and admitting their lack of knowledge regarding the offensive nature of the gesture. They vowed to exercise more caution in the future and limit posts related to their work.
“I sincerely apologize for my ignorance and any inconvenience caused. I deeply regret my actions. Moving forward, I will limit my tweets related to my work to the necessary minimum. Thank you for your understanding.“
