How Well Did One Piece Film: Red Perform In India?

The best measure of a movie’s performance at the box office is undeniably the money it rakes in over time. However, when it comes to the performance of some anime movies in India, the numbers aren’t so readily available.

The same goes for One Piece Film: Red.

While it got rave reviews from majority of the filmgoers, the distributors have shied away from openly declaring what the movie has earned. Reasons usually revolved around confidentiality issues.

But, recent developments saw prominent content creators on social media circulating the earnings that One Piece Film: Red managed to bring in. While we can’t vouch for its veracity, the movie supposedly made 3.15 crores in its first ten days.

The number falls short of what Jujutsu Kaisen 0 managed to earn in India, despite releasing in almost similar number of theatres and slightly fares better when it comes to Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which was released in more theatres than One Piece.

Well, according to many, outright comparison of One Piece Film: Red and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is not completely fair. There is belief that the performance of a canon movie is always bound to be better than that of a non-canon one like Film Red. However, Japanese box office numbers of the movie bust that myth.

Due its inability to break its predecessors record in India, the earnings of the latest One Piece movie would not be seen favorably by anime enthusiasts.

So, does this development spell the decline of a recent anime movie bubble that was set in motion with the arrival of JJK 0?

Definitely not.

PVR Pictures, the distributors who brought One Piece Film: Red to India, told Animehunch Team that they are satisfied with how the movie has been performing. In fact, they expect it to replicate Jujutsu Kaisen‘s successful run in the Indian theatres.

They reaffirmed their stance of bringing more anime movies to India, and this time, added that they would also consider dubbing the movies in multiple regional languages. This could very well serve as a testament of One Piece Film: Red‘s Hindi dub version’s success.

We are extremely happy with the performance and it’s on par with our expectations. We will be bringing more anime movies to India and are also considering dubbing in an array of local languages to reach more and more Indian audiences. The movie is running successfully and we are confident it will enjoy a similar run like JJK0 in cinemas
