Netflix will distribute Legendary Entertainment’s live-action Gundam film, according to a report by Deadline. The film is expected to star Noah Centineo, with Sydney Sweeney reportedly attached.

Netflix and Legendary are yet to comment on the latest development.

The project is being developed jointly by Legendary and franchise owner Bandai Namco Filmworks. Jim Mickle, known for directing Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, is set to write and direct the film, which is tentatively titled GUNDAM. Mickle will also serve as a producer alongside his longtime collaborator Linda Moran through their production company Nightshade. Centineo is producing as well with his partner Enzo Marc.

Reports of Sweeney’s involvement first surfaced in March 2025, when she was said to be in final talks for a role in the film. As of January 2026, her casting has not been formally announced by the studio.

The live-action film is part of a wider overseas expansion strategy for the franchise. Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. signed a joint investment agreement with Legendary Entertainment in January 2025 to support the production of the film.

The film was originally announced in 2021, with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached at the time and Brian K. Vaughan handling the script. The project later shifted creative direction, leading to Mickle taking over writing and directing duties.

Mobile Suit Gundam debuted as an anime series produced by Nippon Sunrise and created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The original series aired in Japan from April 7, 1979, to January 26, 1980, spanning 43 episodes.

Since then, the franchise has expanded into a long-running series, consisting of 25 anime series, 34 theatrical films, 27 OVAs, and numerous streaming, event, and TV special productions.
