Gundam Creator Reveals One Of Series’ Biggest Controversies Was Inspired By Real-Life Historical Events

Since its release in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam has become a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its complex storytelling and exploration of war’s impact on humanity.

However, the choice to center the series on Amuro Ray, a teenager thrust into battle, has often been seen as a critique of the exploitation of youth during wartime. Amuro Ray features in the universal century timeline of the series.

Debates still take place on why he was entrusted with piloting an advanced war machine, and why children were depicted as active participants in war.

And finally, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the series has shed light on the inspiration behind this controversial narrative choice.

In a recent statement, Tomino revealed that the depiction of children in war within Mobile Suit Gundam was intentionally influenced by real-life historical events, specifically the use of child soldiers during the final stages of World War II.

I was well aware of the existence of child soldiers during the final stages of the Pacific War,” Tomino explained. “For example, when boys turned 16, they were sent to training schools for tank operators. In the navy, during the war’s last days, even the battleship Yamato had child soldiers on board.

Tomino emphasized that these historical realities raised significant questions about why children were forced to participate in war. By incorporating a similar theme into Mobile Suit Gundam, he aimed to provoke viewers into reflecting on the harsh realities of warfare.

I wanted people to be consciously aware of such historical facts. That’s why, quite intentionally, I had Amuro, a young boy, pilot Gundam.

Tomino’s comments not only contextualize the controversial decision but also reinforce Gundam’s reputation as a series that invites audiences to question the ethics of war.

Mobile Suit Gundam is a Japanese anime television series that premiered on April 7, 1979, and concluded on Jan 26, 1980, totaling 43 episodes.

Created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series was produced by Nippon Sunrise (now Sunrise Inc.).

Set in the futuristic “Universal Century” year 0079, the narrative centers on the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The Earth Federation introduces a new giant robot, the RX-78-2 Gundam, piloted by a teenage civilian mechanic named Amuro Ray.

The series is credited with pioneering the “real robot” subgenre of mecha anime, portraying mobile suits as realistic military weapons rather than invincible superheroes.

This approach influenced subsequent mecha series and contributed to the genre’s evolution.

Despite initial low ratings leading to its early cancellation, Mobile Suit Gundam gained popularity through reruns and the introduction of Bandai’s Gunpla models in 1980.

This resurgence resulted in a successful media and toy franchise, including numerous sequels, spin-offs, and adaptations across various media.
