Gintama Creator Calls New Anime & Movie ‘A Tool For Dirty Adults To Make Quick Money’

Gintama creator Hideaki Sorachi has once again shown his trademark self-deprecating humor while announcing that the Ginapchi-sensei spinoff will receive an anime adaptation, alongside a brand-new Gintama movie.

In a comment released with the announcement, Sorachi jokingly described the projects as a way for “dirty adults” to squeeze out more money from a series that ended six years ago.

In his message, Sorachi expressed gratitude to fans for continuing to support the franchise but noted that the series has been stretched far beyond its original run.

He compared Gintama’s post-manga success across anime, films, and live-action adaptations to a work being drained of all its flavor, while still acknowledging it as a strange kind of honor for a creator.

The author also reflected on how Gintama adaptations have managed to thrive, often in ways that felt like it was only narrowly succeeding. He joked that if the franchise keeps moving forward like this, it may eventually fail dramatically, and that such an outcome would still feel fitting for Gintama.

Sorachi even slipped in a playful jab at lead voice actor Tomokazu Sugita, keeping in line with the series’ style.

Thanks to everyone’s support, it has been decided that Ginpachi-sensei will get an anime adaptation, and that yet another movie will be produced. Thank you very much.

To see a work that finished its serialization six years ago still being used as a tool for dirty adults to make a quick buck, being sucked dry until there’s no flavor left—in its own way, this is the ultimate honor for an author. Or so I feel as I gaze upon my bankbook.

Gintama is a rarely seen, fortunate work that has somehow managed to succeed—or rather, has made it look like it succeeded—in everything from anime and novels to movies and live-action, barely getting away with a win each time. However, if things continue like this, it feels like we won’t be able to stop until it spectacularly bombs somewhere down the line. Therefore, I feel that perhaps ending it all in a glorious explosion due to some issue, like the circumstances of Mr. Sugita’s lower half, would also count as “getting away with a win” in true Gintama fashion.

Everyone, please look forward to both the Ginpachi-sensei anime and the movie, as well as the future activities of Tomokazu Sugita.

From the dirtiest mastermind of all

A new compilation film based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga, titled Gintama New Film Version: Yoshiwara in Flames, is scheduled for release in 2026. The announcement was made via a teaser trailer during a 20th-anniversary event for the franchise.

The film will reportedly adapt the “Yoshiwara in Flames” story arc from the original series, which spanned episodes 139-146, and will feature newly animated scenes. The staff also stated that characters who did not originally appear in the arc would be included in the film.

At the same event, the staff confirmed an Oct 6 premiere date for the anime adaptation of GINTAMA – Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class, a spinoff novel series by Tomohito Ōsaki.

These announcements were part of a wider 20th-anniversary celebration for the Gintama franchise. The celebration also included planned 4DX screenings of previous films in Japan. The 2013 movie Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya is scheduled for screenings starting on Aug 22, 2025 and the 2021 film Gintama THE VERY FINAL is set to begin its run on Nov 14, 2025.
