The final episode of Dragon Ball Daima, titled Maximum (or Zenkai), aired on March 1, 2025 in Japan, marking the end of the series and coinciding with the first death anniversary of Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise.
Toriyama passed away last year after suffering from an acute subdural hematoma.
The author was deeply involved in the creation of Dragon Ball Daima for six years, contributing to the story, character designs, and overall concept. This was important as he wasn’t always as hands-on with the anime adaptations of his work.
And thanks to that, the finale of Dragon Ball Daima certainly had this “Toriyama-ish” quality to it – with light hearted moments often overshadowing the serious ones. This is something that fans loved and made them nostalgic.
In line with Toriyama’s style, no characters (including villains) were killed. The series, and its ending, chose to stand out as a lighthearted and fun adventure of Goku and his friends.
While the reactions to the finale itself have been mixed, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to Akira Toriyama, as this was the last work he was and would ever be a part of. Considering that, the final episode of Daima airing on the same day marking one year of Toriyama’s death was a landmark in itself.
Fans thanked Toriyama for inspiring a generation, and also for his contribution to Dragon Ball Daima. Meanwhile some also noted that the end of the anime marked the end of an era.
While tributes continued to pour out for Toriyama, there were also concerns raised about the ending of the anime. Questions about Daima‘s continuity and its connection to Super were always there.
However, by the time episode 20 finished airing, some viewers complained that not all loose ends were tied, which could affect the future continuity, especially given that Dragon Ball Daima was confirmed to be canon by producer Akio Iyoku.
It is also possible the ending leaves the door open for a potential sequel, movie, or related project. Debates are also going on about Goku’s SSJ 4 version, and how it will feature in the future projects of the franchise.
Despite all that, Daima will turn out be a landmark for the Dragon Ball franchise, as new shows and games are planned for the future.
