The Japan Video Software Association released the sales figures for DVD/Blu-Ray sales for the first half of 2022. The sales were down by 19.7% year-on-year and garnered a revenue of 55.82 billion yen. The reason they sighted for this is the blockbuster hit movie Demon Slayer Mugen Train. It created a wave of watching movies in theatres than purchasing it as a DVD, says Japan Video Software Association.
Of the total sales, DVD sales were 22,891 million yen and Blu-Ray sales were 32,929 million yen.
The decline for anime DVD sales was the highest with a percentage of 56.4%.
The total earnings of Anime DVD was 11.82 billion yen, a down of 54.6% from the previous year. In the first half of 2021. the anime DVD sales for Japanese Anime for General public and Japanese anime for children, rental and individual sales were 26.077 billion yen.
The boom of the DVD sales in 2020 prior to the release of Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie in theatres, was 18.677 billion yen.
The shrinkage of the animation video software market can be seen as a long-term trend. Although the business model of animation production has already undergone a major shift, the situation of the video software market, which is still expected to be 20 to 30 billion yen per year, will have no choice but to affect the industry.
