Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Movie Overtakes Shinkai’s Your Name To Become Fourth Highest Grossing Movie In Japan

The movie achieved the landmark in just 31 days.

The latest installment in the Demon Slayer franchise has climbed to fourth place on Japan’s all-time box office chart, surpassing Makoto Shinkai’s critically acclaimed 2016 film, your name.

It was announced on Aug 18, 2025, that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie – Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1: The Return of Akaza had earned a cumulative total of 25.78 billion yen (approx. 175.4 million USD) in its first 31 days of release. The film, which opened on July 18, 2025, sold 18,272,941 tickets in that period.

The achievement pushed the film past the 25.5 billion yen lifetime gross of Disney’s Frozen (2014) and the 25.03 billion yen total of your name. to secure the No. 4 spot in Japanese box office history.

In comparison, Mugen Train had earned 23.34 billion yen from 17.5 million admissions in its first 31 days since release in 2020. This is approximately 2.4 billion yen less than what the new film grossed. On the other hand, your name. movie took almost one year to cross 25 billion yen.

If this performance continues, Infinity Castle will overtake Titanic and Spirited Away, which are currently the third and second highest earning movies in Japanese box office, before going for Mugen Train‘s record.

Earlier in its theatrical run, the Infinity Castle movie had already surpassed several major blockbusters on its way up the charts. After just 25 days, its earnings of 22.07 billion yen (approx. 150.4 million USD) moved it past the 20.34 billion yen total of One Piece Film: Red (2022) to claim the sixth position at the time.

The film first broke into the top 10 after 17 days, when its box office total of 17.63 billion yen (approx. 119.3 million USD) exceeded the gross of the 2003 film Bayside Shakedown 2.

The film set a new record as the fastest in Japanese cinema history to earn 10 billion yen. It reached the milestone just eight days after its release, two days faster than the previous record set by Mugen Train. By its tenth day in theaters, Infinity Castle had grossed 12.8 billion yen from more than 9.1 million admissions.

The movie’s financial success was evident from its opening weekend, when it broke three major box office records for a film released in Japan: highest opening weekend revenue, highest opening day revenue, and highest single-day revenue. The film grossed over 7.3 billion yen in its opening four-day period and took in 1.64 billion yen from 1.15 million admissions on its first day alone.

The feature-length film has a runtime of 155 minutes, and is the first instalment of the planned trilogy of movies which will adapt the Infinity Castle arc from the original manga by Koyoharu Gotouge.

An international release starting from Aug 12, 2025 by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment has been announced. The movie will hit theatres in United States and Canada on Sep 12, 2025.
