Chiba West Office City Police arrested a 49-year-old suspect on Friday, Jan 21, 2022, on suspicion of attempted “quasi-rape” (the legal term in Japan for forced sexual attempts on individuals who are unconscious or unable to resist) of at least six female cosplayers.
Daisuke Kuroiwa, who is unemployed and had an unspecified address, reportedly approached cosplayers at cosplay events and offered to photograph them inside his car, according to authorities.
He would then drive them to a shooting location such as a beach or a park and then supposedly offer them an unopened pet bottle drink, and then slip an incapacitating drug into the drink when the cosplayers were not looking.
The suspect confessed at the time of his arrest that he targeted “girls who didn’t stand out, and hung around in the back corners of an event.”
“I wanted to do obscene acts with my “chosen girls”. I wanted to touch their breasts,” he continued.
According to Chiba Nippo, the police started their investigations after one of the suspect’s victims came forward and contacted the police last spring. Till now, 9 cases have been filed and 5 of them are prosecuted.
Sankei News reported, between Feb 11, 2020 and July 8, 2021, the suspect victimized at least six girls and women in their teens and 20s (including high school-aged girls) from Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa prefectures, and Tokyo city.
