Chainsaw Man chapter 178 is a very short read. You can flip through the pages in less than a minute. That’s much like most of the chapters in the series.
But despite its brevity, this one is a classic Fujimoto.
We’re back in familiar territory here, with a significant chunk of the chapter devoted to Yoru’s monstrous cross-country “bang,” powered by the Gun Devil’s influence.
A superb 10-page sequence highlights Yoru’s devastating attack, and Fujimoto’s art absolutely shines. Any criticism of his artwork in Part 2 can and should be put to rest. I mean just take a look at the breathtaking double spread and the meticulously illustrated scenes throughout this chapter.
The Gun Goddess Yoru:
In my previous review, I speculated that Yoru was preparing for an incredibly powerful move involving the Gun Devil. That came true in chapter 178.
Sure enough, her preparation for this attack caused over 400,000 members of the USA’s National Pistol Association to lose their index fingers—their trigger fingers. This act was likely a sacrifice made as part of a contract with the Gun Devil, unleashing Yoru’s massive attack.
In the end, we witnessed an attack which caused massive destruction, and left Pochita looking very similar to a Baki meme. The blood donation drive didn’t go well!
For those confused about the Gun Devil and the Statue of Liberty in recent chapters, here’s an interesting tidbit: in Japanese, the words for “gun” and “liberty” have similar pronunciations.
The Gun Devil in Japanese is know as the Juu no Akuma.
Gun – 銃 (pronounced as Juu)
Liberty – 自由 (pronounced as jiyu)
This wordplay might be Fujimoto’s clever way of linking the Gun Devil to the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing freedom and destruction.
And speaking of destruction, the design of the devilish entity that emerged from the statue was spot on—eerie, menacing, and armed with a trigger finger that fired like a bullet.
However, I’m still unsure about what devil the Statue of Liberty actually represents. My assumption is that the part of the Gun Devil that was in the possession of the United States was killed by Makima in Part 1.
So what exactly is this devil? I’d love to hear your theories—drop them in the comments below.
Yoru and Asa’s dynamics:
Moving on to character dynamics, Fujimoto has continued to build on the growing tension between Yoru and Asa in Chainsaw Man chapter 178.
Yoru’s cold, detached statement that children are merely their parents’ property had already planted doubts in Asa’s mind. And watching her revel in her destructive attack, one that likely claimed countless lives, only solidified Asa’s doubts.
Asa is coming to terms with a painful reality: Yoru is a devil through and through. And no matter how much time they spend together, that fundamental nature won’t change.

Asa probably is beginning to question whether Yoru has truly been on her side—or whether she’s just another pawn in the War Devil’s larger plan.
If you ask me, Yoru merely seems like a child in awe of her new toys to me. She doesn’t exactly come across as a scheming brooding type.
However, the way Asa navigates her growing suspicions will undoubtedly shape her relationship with Yoru moving forward.
And it’s clear that their bond is starting to fracture.
I also want to point out Asa’s complicity in whatever happened. She may not have been in control, but she inadvertently played a part in Yoru’s attack, which led to so much destruction.
Some readers have pointed out that Fujimoto may have foreshadowed this moment early on through Asa’s dreams, particularly the scene with dead chickens lying in the alley.
Could this have been a hint at the devastation Asa would eventually cause?
Now, I know the term “foreshadowing” gets thrown around a lot in discussions about shonen manga, sometimes to the point of losing meaning.
However, I won’t downplay how well Fujimoto has built up to this moment. The high-octane action in the recent chapters didn’t come out of nowhere—it’s been carefully laid out, and we’re finally seeing it all come to fruition.
Public safety, aging devil and the Chainsaw Man:
The last stretch of the chapter is where things get even more confusing. If you recall from Chapter 174, Public Safety had set a plan in motion that involved having Chainsaw Man consume the Aging Devil.
What stood out, however, was how oddly cooperative the Aging Devil was in this arrangement—openly offering itself to be consumed by Pochita.
From the start, something felt off about this plan. The fact that the proposal was conveniently pitched to a room full of old people—the ones who would benefit the most from the consumption of the Aging Devil—seemed a little too convenient.
Adding to the unease, the Aging Devil itself presented a contract that had an unsettling, sinister undertone: sacrificing 10,000 children. Strangely, everyone present quickly agreed to it without much hesitation.
But the real question here is, why would a Primal Devil, a being that supposedly hasn’t faced death, willingly submit to being consumed?
Ofcourse, this could mirror the twisted attraction Makima had for Pochita, but the Aging Devil’s dialogue in Chapter 178 adds a whole new layer of complexity and raises more doubts.
Aging Devil seems to have its own agenda in this arrangement (probably). Its conversation with Chainsaw Man carried an air of familiarity, almost as if there’s some history between them that hasn’t yet been revealed. The whole situation is wrapped in mystery.
Additionally, each time Chainsaw Man consumes part of it, children will die. And by the time the devil is fully devoured, up to 10,000 children will have been killed, each in front of a mirror.
The imagery is haunting. In fact a mirror has already appeared in front of the Aging Devil in the final panels, with the unassuming children walking by.
The killing of children remains the most unsettling part of this revelation. If these children die, does it somehow strengthen the devil?
And more importantly, could that newfound strength interfere with Chainsaw Man’s ability to consume it? Screams in Chainsaw Man!!
And what exactly is Public Safety playing at? Is this part of their plan, or are they being deceived as well? The more you think about it, the more questions keep piling up, and none of them have easy answers.
Well, I am looking forward to the next chapter as usual. Can’t wait to see what will happen!!
