CloverWorks studio, a subsidiary of Aniplex, announced a net loss of 29 million yen and a deficit in the fiscal year ending in March 2023. This information was revealed in the company’s financial statement published in the “Official Gazette” on July 3, 2023.
The latest financial outcome marks a significant downturn compared to the previous fiscal year, during which they posted a net profit of 46 million yen.
The Studio’s decline into the red caught netizens off-guard because CloverWorks had produced some popular anime titles in the fiscal year ending in March 2023, including Spy x Family (aired from April 2022 – June 2022), Bocchi the Rock! (aired from October 2022 to December 2022) and even the second season of Shadows House (aired from July 2022 to September 2022).
While the specific reason for the loss was not stated in the report, a discourse among fans pointed at factors such as increased production costs, delays in project schedules, or lower-than-expected revenues from licensing and distribution to have contributed to the financial setback.
CloverWorks not being a part of the production committee in the anime titles it produces was too factored in as a possible reason for the studio posting deficits.
CloverWorks’ parent company, Aniplex, meanwhile posted a net profit of 20.720 billion yen for the fiscal year ending in March 2023. However, this was down 17.5% from that of the previous fiscal year.
CloverWorks Inc. is a Japanese animation studio that was rebranded from A-1 Pictures’ Koenji Studio. The rebranding took place on April 1, 2018. It is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan’s anime production firm Aniplex.
Some of the other popular titles produced by the studio till now includes, Darling in the Franxx, Horimiya, Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai, My Dress Up Darling, Wonder Egg Priority, etc.
