Rumors are swirling online that Tatsuya Yoshihara, who served as a director and then Chief Director for Black Clover anime, may be taking the helm as director for the upcoming Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.
This rumor is gaining tractions because of the perceived departure of the anime’s first season director, Ryu Nakayama, who announced the formation of his own animation studio, Andraft Co. Ltd earlier this year.
While Studio MAPPA remains the production house for the Chainsaw Man movie, Nakayama’s move to a new studio had fueled speculations about the future direction of the adaptation.
Nakayama, who was also appointed Chief Creative Officer of animation studio Mayflower this year, had previously hinted at challenges within the production environment on X (formerly Twitter).
He expressed a desire to create a better working environment free from unnecessary power and moral harassment, leading many to believe his departure from MAPPA was linked to these concerns.
Interestingly, Yoshihara has already contributed to Chainsaw Man as an episode director for the first season, notably helming episodes 4 and 10.
Fans have praised his ability to blend Nakayama’s cinematic style with the fast paced action sequences characteristic of the manga.
And due to this reason, there is a chance that the anime movie might not deviate too much from the cinematic experience that the first season had to offer.
Nakayama’s vision for the Chainsaw Man anime adaptation was met with mixed reactions from fans.
Some criticized his emphasis on cinematic pacing and realism, arguing it detracted from the manga’s over-the-top energy and gore. Others, however, appreciated his unique approach and the visual flair he brought to the series.
The Chainsaw Man panel at Jump Festa ’24 announced that the series is getting an anime film, which will adapt the ‘Reze arc’ of the manga.
Till now only a teaser for the movie has been revealed, with no concrete release date announced.
