Best Selling Manga In The United States In January 2022

Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man topped the best selling charts.

The American newspaper company, New York Times, and POS tracking giant, NPD BookScan, released the monthly “Graphic Books & Manga” and “Adult Graphic novels” list respectively for January 2022. Both the lists feature Japanese manga taking most of the spots in the United States.

The rankings show sales of manga by volume as calculated by these two agencies.

The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—Stories of Water and Flame manga by Koyoharu Gotouge and Ryoji Hirano was placed #2 on The New York Times monthly Graphic Books and Manga bestseller list released in early February.

A total of 10 out of 15 spots were occupied by manga, with Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s Chainsaw Man placing itself in four spots alone.

Furthermore, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—Stories of Water and Flame also ranked #1 on NPD BookScan’s Top 20 adult graphic novels list for the first month of 2022.

Among the big titles, the chart includes seven volumes of Chainsaw Man, four of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and three of Jujutsu Kaisen.

In December 2021, almost half the chart was taken up by two series: five volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen and four volumes of Chainsaw Man.

According to NPD BookScan, manga sales made up over 76% of sales by volume of the overall comics and graphic novel category in the United States in 2021.

Experts say this was the direct result of the boom in anime, with pandemic-stricken readers going into a manga buying spree. The anime effect was clearly visible, as the top manga series by sales were closely linked to the most popular anime series on OTT platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll.
