Dragon Ball Super Manga Sales Decline Post Broly Movie Release

The sales figures continued to drop till Volume 12, then stabilized and remained flat till the current Volume 17.

Twitter user and the infographic guy @Josu_ke released the sales evolution of the Dragon Ball Super Manga on Jan 17, 2022, where a steady decline in the sales of volumes 9, 10,11 and 12, post release of the Broly Movie can be observed.

The sales data includes volume by volume comparison, with each bar divided into 4 weeks of sales run. The data is a combination of estimates by Oricon and Shoseki in Japan. The figures include ONLY the physical volume sales. Digital sales data is omitted.

As seen above, the 1st Volume had the lowest sales, and the only volume to sell below 50,000 units. The 1st volume covers the God of Destruction Beerus and a portion of the Universe 6 Saga and both were already animated (2013 and 2015) before the Manga volume dropped (Apr 14, 2016).

The numbers increased manyfold during the run of the Universe 6 saga until the end of the Future Trunks saga.

The Universe 6 Saga in the Manga (Oct 21, 2015 – 21 June, 2016) was ahead of the Anime (Jan 24, 2016 – June 5, 2016). However, the Anime slowly started catching up from the beginning of the Future Trunks arc (June 12, 2016 – Jan 29, 2017) and then went past the Manga by a wide margin towards the end of the arc (July 12, 2016 – July 21, 2017).

The Manga saw the best sales figures in Volumes 4 and 5, but decreased dramatically in Volumes 6 and 7 (which covered the Universal Survival Saga). The anime (Feb 5, 2017 – Mar 25, 2018) was well ahead of the manga (Aug 21, 2017 – Nov 21, 2018) at the time.

What’s more, the actual Tankōbon volumes were released much later than the V-Jump Magazines (June 4, 2018, Sept 4, 2018 & Dec 4, 2018).

The Manga version of the Universal Survival Saga was rushed to catch up with the anime and finish before the release of the Broly film. In fact, Volume 8 sales picked up slightly better than the previous because of the Broly movie being released at that time (Dec 14, 2018).

Volumes 9,10 and & 11 saw a continuous decline in sales and at Volume 12, the number went below the 200,000 mark for the first time since Volume 2.

Volumes 13 and 14 witnessed a little uptick (Volume 14 surpassed the 200,000 mark) due to a big plot twist and the duel between MUI Goku and Moro. Following that, the numbers plummeted and have continued to do so, along with the current Volume 17.

The Dragon Ball Super Manga initially was seen as promo material for the Anime. It later went past the Anime ending on Dec 21, 2018, into the Moro arc.

Currently, the Manga is serializing the Granolah arc and is on its way to reaching the climax sometime this year and a new arc is announced to follow the preceding.

Earlier in December last year, Victory Uchida interviewed Manga author Toyotarou to commemorate the release of Dragon Ball Super Volume 17. During the interview, Uchida asked questions that fans posted a month prior to the interview release date.

Written by Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou, Dragon Ball Super is a Japanese manga and anime series that follows on from the original Dragon Ball manga. Having a monthly release schedule, it began serialization in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine V-Jump in June 2015. As of December 2021, the series is compiled into 17 volumes.
