The online petition “Save the live-action Cowboy Bepop” by Ryan Proffer, aiming to ask Netflix to continue the series for a second season, garnered more than 100,000 signatures as of Jan 6, 2022.
The petition on Change.org started last year and at the time of writing, it has collected over 101,000 signatures. The petition needs to reach the 150,000 mark in order to be marked as the top signed petition on the site.
Proffer asked fellow fans to contribute to the cause which says, “For those people who want a second (or more) of the live-action cowboy bebop. It wasn’t a direct copy of the anime, but the world they put together was amazing and deserve a second season.”
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the anime, Cowboy Bebop, was canceled less than a month after its season one premiere due to disappointing reception.
Many signing the Cowboy Bebop season 2 petition, paired their signatures with comments defending the series against its harsher critics, praising the cast for their efforts.
Some signers have also commended the live-action adaptation for its work in homaging its source material and criticizing those who expected a direct translation of the original anime to the screen rather than being open to changes.
A handful of contributors have commented that Netflix should at least give Cowboy Bebop one more season to keep in line with the anime, which also had two seasons.
Netflix did not release an official explanation as to why the series was canceled. However, shortly after its release, Cowboy Bebop received a relatively low rating on Rotten Tomatoes, pulling 47% from critics and 58% from fans. Viewership for the live-action also saw a steep decline in viewership, dropping 59% in the first week after its debut.
The 10-episode series debuted on Nov. 19, 2021, on Netflix.
Netflix and Tomorrow Studios co-produced the series starring John Cho as Spike, Mustafa Shakir as Jet, Daniella Pineda as Faye, Alex Hassell as Vicious, and Elena Satine as Julia.
