Earlier this year the manga community lost one of the greats. Kentaro Miura, creator of the manga franchise “Berserk,” passed away in May, leaving the future of the long-running dark fantasy uncertain.
To honor the 32 years of Kentaro Miura’s career, Hakusensha announced the “Dai Berserk-ten (Great Berserk Exhibition)”, containing hundreds of original sketches, art, manuscripts, and other artifacts from the long history of Berserk. The official Twitter account of the upcoming Berserk exhibit revealed on August 28, that an art book will be on sale that features unseen work by the mangaka, as well as a new interview.
Initially, the Berserk exhibition was to take place from January 30 through February 15, but those plans were postponed due to COVID-19. In June, it was rescheduled to be held from September 10th to September 23rd at Hall A at Ikebukuro’s Sunshine City in Tokyo.
“The Great Berserk Exhibition, Kentaro Miura: 32 Years of Artistry, “will detail in chronological order the adventures of Guts and his companions on their seemingly now endless quest for revenge.
The exhibition will be the first independent exhibit for the manga. The exhibit launched a crowdfunding campaign in October 2020 to build a giant statue of Zodd the Immortal for the exhibit. The campaign raised 13,542,000 yen (about US$130,480) of its 10 million yen (about US$96,350) goal.
Miura launched the manga in 1989. The story follows Guts, a superhumanly strong warrior who wields a large sword, as he wanders a dark medieval world filled with demons, corrupt and decadent nobles, and other horrors. Every night, demons attacked him for the curse branded on him after a traumatic event. He makes his way through the world on a quest to slay a former friend turned demon, who took everything away from him.
The 18th issue of Young Animal will pay tribute to the late Berserk creator Kentaro Miura. This issue will feature chapter 364 of Miura’s legendary series as well as a special memorial booklet and special color poster which will release on September 10, 2021. The manga has inspired three television anime series, an anime film trilogy, and several video games.
