Azuki CEO Shares Origin Story Of The New Digital Manga Streaming Service, Launches June 28

Azuki's CEO wants the streaming service to serve as a space where readers could read manga and discuss it with other fans, sharing opinions, recommendations, and more.

KiraKira Media Inc. announced on Thursday that a new digital manga streaming service will debut on June 28 on iOS, Android, and web browsers in English globally except Japan. Azuki has collaborated with Kodansha USA as its first partner to make the most popular titles of Japanese publisher’s available for on-demand viewing.

Azuki

In the recent update message on Azuki’s website, co-founder and CEO Mr. Abbas Jaffery revealed their origin story for the streaming service and how they came up with the name.

As the name and logo suggests, ‘Azuki’ means beans. And they came up with the idea of naming the service after beans when Jaffery revealed his favourite snacks while reading manga is “mochi”. Furthermore, he disclosed in the message that his idea to create Azuki actually buds from his wish to experience a space where he could read manga and discuss it with other fans, sharing opinions, recommendations, and more.

Jaffery assures that Azuki IS a big deal that has the dream team(co-founders from Kodansha, Yelp, The Internet Archive, and Medium) who came together to create this manga service. A service that works across phones, tablets, and computers, with free chapters and great community features.

Azuki will feature series from Kodansha on its debut, all officially licensed and in high quality. The service will offer simulpub manga chapters that will be streamable in English shortly after they launch in Japan in addition to a library of other titles.

Azuki will have content for both free and subscription users. The service will be free for select chapters with ads, but users who sign up for Azuki’s $4.99 per month subscription service will get access to the service’s entire library, ad-free. Comment threads will be available on each chapter for registered users to discuss the story with fellow fans.

Titles available at launch include worldwide hits like Attack on Titan, Tokyo Revengers, and Fairy Tail, as well as bitter-sweet reads like Land of the Lustrous and Chihayafuru. Simulpub mangas such as EDENS ZERO, Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card and To Your Eternity will be updated on the website and apps before long after their Japanese release.
