eBay Bans Hentai, Yaoi Sales But Approves Playboy & Penthouse!

The e-commerce giant will close the “adult-only” section and ban the sale of most adult content and items from June 15th 2021.

On May 13th, eBay rolled out emails to sellers to implement a new “Adults Items Policy”. The e-commerce giant will close the “adult-only” section and ban the sale of most adult content and items. This policy will take effect from June 15th 2021.

Multiple items that were till now legal to sell and purchase on eBay will be banned. The platform is specifically pointing at “sexually explicit anime, comics, books, animation, manga, hentai, yaoi” as being part of that ban. Furthermore, any items containing nudity will also be prohibited. Even modeled clothing that “is see-through or very tight and shows human genitalia, the anus, or the nipple/areola of female breasts” is a no-go.

However, eBay contradicts itself to allow multiple American adult magazines to avoid the ban. For example, Playboy, Playgirl, Mayfair, Butt (magazine), Gayletter, Penthouse, etc. are not restricted to be on sale as long as they do not contain sexually explicit content.

Other items that dodged the ban hammer are artworks depicting nudity. As long as they do not contain sexually suggestive poses and sellers relist them under the “Art and Collectables” section, they will be considered as an exception. Similarly, sex toys and sex accessories have an allowance, provided the products not include any images of nudity or sexual content.

Ebay’s reasoning for the change is very vague. In a one-sentence explanation, they replied to the prompt saying, “We want to make adult items available to those who wish to purchase them and can do so legally, while preventing those who do not wish to view or purchase these items from easily accessing them.”
