Man Opens 12 Dragon Ball “Ichiban Kuji”, Gets Arrested

On the 12th of May, the Fukuoka District Court Kokura Branch sentenced him to one year in prison on charges of obstructing counterfeit business.

Fans sometimes get crazy when it comes to anime merchandise. In Japan, this obsessive behaviour is not only seen in teenagers but also full-grown adults! One such incident happened in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu City, Japan that revolved around Dragon Ball “Ichiban Kuji”.

A 31-year-old plumber in Ashiya Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, said that he opened 12 Dragon Ball “Ichiban Kuji”, which lets people win popular anime character goods at a convenience store, and put them back in the box without paying the price. On the 12th of May, the Fukuoka District Court Kokura Branch sentenced him to one year in prison on charges of obstructing counterfeit business.

According to the court, the defendant opened 12 lottery tickets for the anime “Dragon Ball” (total selling price: 8160 yen) at a convenience store in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu City at around 10:30 pm on November 6, 2020, without paying the price. After making it unsellable, he put it back in the box, making it difficult for employees to carry out their duties.

About two hours after the man left the store, a clerk found several torn lottery tickets in the box and discovered the man from the video of a security camera. Finally, the Fukuoka District Inspection Ogura Branch arrests and charges the defendant for violating the Road Traffic Law (unlicensed driving). Then re-arrests him on suspicion of damage to property, and was charges with damage to property and obstruction of counterfeit business.

“Ichiban Kuji” is a sure-win lucky draw ticket of character goods. Convenience stores, bookstores, and arcades sells these tickets. Normally, a person takes the provided purchase ticket in the store to the cashier. Then he/she tells the employee the number of purchases, pays the price, and then pulls the lottery out of the box to open it. The cashier at the shop then hands over the prize on the spot.
