Sukuna’s Fingers: Everything You Need To Know About Them In Jujutsu Kaisen!

Ryomen Sukuna, the main antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen quickly climbed the popularity ladder in the anime community.

I’m sure that you remember Sukuna’s introduction, a demon sealed in his own 20 fingers.

While you know that, do you actually know about his fingers? In this article, we’ll go over various questions that you might have, so let’s get right into it!

What are Sukuna’s fingers?

Sukuna’s fingers are special grade cursed objects that contain the remnants of Sukuna’s soul in the form of a cursed spirit.

In all, there are 20 fingers of Ryomen Sukuna that exist currently in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Referred to as a “natural calamity”, Ryomen Sukuna was a shaman who wandered around in the Heian Era, pillaging villages and leaving a trail of blood behind.

When he finally met his end against an alliance of all the Jujutsu sorcerers of the era, Sukuna turned into a cursed spirit.

However, before turning into a full fledged cursed spirits, the shamans sealed away him in his 20 fingers.

These fingers, preserved in his own grave wax, traversed time and continued to terrorize sorcerers even after Sukuna’s death.

Each of these fingers has immense cursed energy and attracts cursed spirits towards them.

How many fingers did Yuji Itadori eat?

Currently (as of chapter 147, post-Shibuya arc) Itadori has consumed 15 fingers of Ryomen Sukuna.

He ate the first finger to rescue Fushigoro. Gojo gave him a second one before admitting him to Tokyo Jujutsu High to test his capacity as a vessel.

The third and fourth fingers were consumed by Sukuna himself after retrieving them from finger bearers (cursed womb (prison) arc and Origin of Obedience arc).

He was later fed a finger by Nanako and Mimiko Hasaba during the Shibuya incident. This was followed by Jogo feeding him 10 fingers at once.

What will happen if Itadori Yuji eats all 20 fingers of Sukuna?

This question arises out of the inevitable end of Jujutsu Kaisen. It is most likely that Yuji will consume all fingers Sukuna, and then he will meet the end he picked for himself.

What indeed will transpire, though? Our curiosity was flamed by Sukuna taking over Yuji at Shibuya after he ate 15 fingers.

At one finger, Sukuna was scary. At fifteen fingers, he was just short of the calamity Akutami claimed him to be.

He toyed with Jogo to his heart’s pleasure (F in the comments for Jogo, both Gojo and Sukuna threw him around).

He also defeated Mahoraga, the strongest shikigami of Ten Shadows, with just a tiny hiccup. But even this fight was not enough to capture Sukuna’s true strength.

Will 20 fingers Sukuna take over Yuji? Quite possible, but Yuji dismissed this possibility post-Shibuya.

He told Yuta that Sukuna would not take over him, but if he does so, Yuta should kill him.

Well, we have seen quite a few bold statements in Jujutsu Kaisen being proved worthless *ahem Gojo ahem*, so let’s take a look at the two possibilities.

A: Sukuna takes over Yuji

With the power of 20 fingers, Sukuna will probably be able to touch the pinnacle of his power. He would not, however, be able to be as strong as he was in the Heian era.

I say so because Yuji’s human body will hold Sukuna back to some extent. That was the plan, wasn’t it? If Sukuna is in a human body, shamans can attempt to defeat and kill him finally.

But, even in a human body, Sukuna’s power is beyond terrifying. His domain expansion is a vicious ability, and his cursed energy is off the charts.

Not to mention his binding vow with Yuji, which we don’t know the purpose of. Going along with his preceding actions, Sukuna would most likely attempt to kill another massive number of people, and what’s to say, he can succeed at it too.

Other than Gojo, nobody else can even hold a candle to 20 fingers Sukuna. Maybe Okkotsu Yuta or Fushiguro Megumi, but we aren’t sure of that yet.

B: Sukuna does not take over Yuji

This possibility entails two things. One, Sukuna will try to reincarnate or find a new body for himself. It seems he is preparing to do that with Uraume’s help (read: chapter 116).

Two, if Sukuna fails to separate himself from Yuji, Yuji will die without a fight. Gojo (or Yuta?) will have to kill Yuji regardless because Sukuna will always be a looming threat.

Another thing from both these possibilities is that Yuji will possibly make Sukuna’s techniques his own. Gojo said that Yuji would do so when he was training him.

If Yuji perfects Sukuna’s ability and Sukuna manages to get out, he can at least provide some insights to the jujutsu society. Can he also perhaps go against Sukuna?

If this is true even after Yuji consumes 20 fingers, he will be unstoppable. Sukuna’s techniques, complemented by Yuji’s superhuman agility, will turn him into a juggernaut of a shaman.

Even 15 fingers Sukuna’s power just might be astonishingly helpful in the Culling Game.

These powers would also mean having an advantage over Kenjaku. But it would irk Sukuna to no end! First, this boy can suppress him, and then he can use his techniques too? Shame on the King of Curses!

Both the possibilities are equally likely and will mostly lead to Yuji’s death. *breaks down*

What do Sukuna’s fingers taste like?

Gege Akutami revealed in the new Jujutsu Kaisen fanbook that Sukuna’s fingers tasted almost similar to soap. This was because the fingers are coated in grave wax.

Grave wax is the wax-like material that appears on corpses when it starts breaking down. It is orange in colour and tastes grosser than we can imagine it to be.

Why didn’t Shamans just destroy Sukuna’s fingers?

Sukuna’s fingers are classified as special grade cursed objects as mentioned above. Special grade cursed objects, unlike normal cursed objects, are indestructible.

Jujutsu is not capable enough to put an end to them. However, there is a way to get rid of them.

Gojo explains why special-grade cursed objects cannot be destroyed.

If the cursed object has a vessel, then destroying the vessel will ultimately cause the cursed object to die as well.

This is exactly what Gojo is aiming for. The higher-ups want to kill Itadori right away since he’s a vessel, but Gojo wants him to eat the rest of the fingers first.

This way, Sukuna will cease to exist.

This brings us to our next question;

Can anybody become a vessel?

The simple answer is no. According to Fushigoro, there’s only a one in a million chance that someone who eats one of Sukuna’s fingers can survive and become a vessel. This is the worst-case scenario.

Chances of Itadori surviving.

Moreover, both Megumi and the Official Jujutsu Kaisen Fanbook states that in normal circumstances, a person would instantly die after eating one of Sukuna’s fingers.

This shows just how strong even one of Sukuna’s finger is. Out of the Cursed Womb: Nine Death Paintings, three are classified as special-grade, namely Choso, Eso and Kechizu.

However, they don’t have any specifications as to who can become a vessel.

Any human, even if they don’t have any cursed energy, can become a vessel for the death paintings. Since Sukuna’s fingers seem to be on such a different level, just how strong are they?

How Strong are Sukuna’s Fingers?

While no specific differences between the power levels of the fingers have been provided; we do have some information and specific incidents which give a good idea about the cursed object’s strength.

A finger bearer, i.e. a cursed spirit who has consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers is classified as a special grade.

At the Sorcerer level, A Semi-grade 1 or a Grade 1 sorcerer should be able to exorcise it. However, the case seemed to have turned on its head when Sukuna possesses Itadori.

In chapter 5, a two-finger strong Sukuna decimated a special-grade finger bearer with ease.

The gap was so big that Sukuna, who only thought of slicing the finger bearer into three pieces through his domain expansion, ended up splitting it into six pieces

In the Origin of Obedience (death painting) arc, Megumi managed to defeat a finger bearer (special-grade cursed spirit) by a slither of hair after achieving an incomplete domain expansion.

This shows just how strong a single-finger of Sukuna is.

However, the case is completely different when Sukuna possesses the fingers. This is perhaps due to his experience and mastery over cursed energy.

His strength is incomparable to finger bearers and even most curses.

To put this into perspective against other Jujutsu Kaisen characters, Jogo is a strong as 8-9 (eight-nine) Sukuna fingers.

A 15 (fifteen) finger completely dominated Jogo, and fought Maharoga with ease, the strongest of Megumi’s Ten Shadows Cursed Technique!

With this explained, we’d like to focus on one detail from the early chapters of JJK which is quite important;

Sukuna’s fingers resonating

When Sukuna manifested in Itadori after the latter consumed a finger, the other fingers which lay dormant for a long time also became active. This is because the other fingers resonated.

When Yuji consumed the finger, the cursed energy that was held back in the cursed object got released. Due to the resonance, other fingers of Sukuna’s also released their cursed energy.

This caused the curses that had consumed them to awaken.

Sukuna's fingers resonating

This was the reason for the curse near the bridge, who consumed Sukuna’s finger became a special-grade cursed spirit and started killing people.

In the early chapters, Gojo said that Itadori will also work as a radar, helping the sorcerers find Sukuna’s fingers.

This was possible as Itadori became a vessel, hence Sukuna should be able to track his other fingers since they are active now.

To support this, Gojo also said that Sukuna would let them know the locations as this is beneficial for him too and goes well with his plan.

While Gojo wasn’t correct with his assumption, he wasn’t entirely wrong too. The fingers kinda did divert the attention of sorcerers and others to themselves.

Is this what Gojo meant by Yuji acting as a radar? Did he know that once a finger is consumed and activated, the others would behave in a same way too?

Probably not. But it was an interesting theory he proposed nevertheless.

With this, we’ve explained everything that we know about Sukuna’s fingers so far. What do you think of this concept of having someone’s fingers sealed away with powers?

Do you think that it is a good addition to the power system of JJK and makes it more interesting or does it have any plotholes?

  1. I think that it was mentioned in the series that Sukuna had a natural death and not even all the jujutsu sorcerers of the golden age together could defeat him.He was so strong that they couldn’t even destroy his grave wax
