Jujutsu Kaisen: This Small Detail May Confirm Rika’s Identity!

We already know that a lot of things get lost in translation. But the official Jujutsu Kaisen translation might have missed conveying an important detail from Chapter 137.

Chapter 137 concerned Okkotsu Yuta appearing again. He is under the order of the higher-ups of the Jujutsu world after the Shibuya Incident. And he is single-mindedly looking at a single goal: kill Itadori Yuji.

In the same chapter, Yuta exorcises a curse to protect a child and prove his loyalty to the echelons of the Jujutsu world. Surprisingly, he calls forth “Rika”, a special grade cursed spirit. However, “Rika” had already died in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. So, who was this Rika?

We had speculated that the Rika Okkotsu calls out to is a different Cursed Spirit. And a new detail surfacing about might have just confirmed our theory!

Twitter user _zanzou_ posted about a translation miss in Chapter 137. In their tweet, the user pointed out that Yuta does call out Rika, but it might not be the same Rika.

Okkotsu Calls Rika

As our fellow writer Srijita Mahapatra explains, Japanese has different writing systems. The same things written in different systems mean different things even with the same sound. And from what _zanzou_ pointed out, Gege Akutami wrote the names of the two Rika’s differently!

The Rika accompanying Okkotsu earlier had her name written in the kanji system as 里香. But the mangaka wrote the new Rika’s name in the katakana system as リカ.

Knowing Akutami’s subtle hints, it is no surprise if this is actually a confirmation of a new Rika’s existence. It makes sense, too, since Yuta has trained for quite a while now, making it easier for him to control curses. Since Okkotsu’s time away from the school is still under wraps, it is still a mystery of who or how powerful this curse is!

Did you speculate the same thing? Let us know in the comments.
