How To Watch Re Zero Anime, OVA, And Movies A Complete Guide

How to watch Re: Zero you ask? Well, it’s pretty straightforward and much easier to get into than the Fate franchise! The simple answer to the question is- follow the release order. But with the new media other than the canons might throw you off a bit.

Don’t worry! We will solve your dilemma. Other than the obvious watch order we have come up with more to enhance your Re: Zero experience!

Plot

Re: Zero − Starting Life in Another World is a Japanese light novel series by Tappei Nagatsuki and Shinichirou Otsuka. The former is the writer and the latter the illustrator. An anime adaptation was announced by Kadokawa in July 2015 with animation by the studio White Fox.

The show begins with our protagonist Natsuki Subaru getting suddenly issekai’d to a fantasy world after leaving a convenience store. Being an otaku who has probably dreamed about something like this happening to him for years, Subaru is naturally excited to be in this new world.

However, to his dismay, Subaru quickly learns that he doesn’t have any special abilities or powers. He encounters the beautiful half elf Emilia when she saves him from a group of thugs. Thus the two of them start their adventure. This beginning seems quite clichéd, however everything changes dramatically when Subaru soon finds himself dead.

Original vs Director’s Cut: What is the difference?

Re: Zero has two seasons, the first has 25 episodes of 25 minutes each and the second season was released recently. Other than the two seasons, a director’s cut has also been released in April 2020. The cut has 13 episodes each about an hour long.

What is Director’s Cut?

A director’s cut is a special edition of an episode/film that portrays the director’s original intent. A director’s cut is usually longer, featuring scenes cut for runtime. They occasionally fill in plot holes or gaps in the narrative via character development or scene-setting, generally making the media easier to understand, as well as in cases updating the graphics. However, this is not always the case as some may just be plain filler.

Should I watch a Director’s cut?

If you don’t mind spending a bit longer watching an anime, seek a ‘fuller’ experience, or want to try it for a rewatch, a director’s cut is for you. However, if you are just a regular watcher, normal TV airing/Blu-ray editions work fine and don’t really subtract anything from the viewing experience as you are unlikely to notice a difference.
