A new trailer for Masaaki Yuasa’s Japan Sinks (Nihon Chinbotsu) anime released on Netflix revealed a July 9 premiere date and four new cast members. The anime is based on Sakyo Komatsu’s critically acclaimed sci-fi disaster novel of the same name. 

The story begins when a series of natural disasters hit Japan, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. As the disasters happen a team of scientists are convinced that Japan, which is on a destructive plate boundary, will sink sooner than expected. 

The anime shifts the setting of the story from 1970s Japan to modern Japan in 2020.

The previously announced cast members include Reina Ueda who voices the 14-year-old protagonist Ayumu Muto. Tomo Muranaka will voice Muto’s younger brother Go Muto. Muto’s mother, Mari, is voiced by Yuko Sasaki while the protagonist’s clever and tenacious father Koichiri Muto is voiced by Masaki Terasoma.

The new cast members announced were;

• Hiroyuki Yoshino, voicing Haruki Koga
• Nanako Mori voicing Nami Miura
• Kensho Ono voicing Kaito &
• Umeji Sasaki voicing Kunio Ashida.
  

Netflix describes the movie’s premise as;

An ordinary family is put to the test as a series of massive earthquakes throws the Japanese archipelago into total mayhem.

The events in the series were originally set to follow after the Tokyo Olympics takes place in Japan in 2020. However, the latest announcement removes the detail about Tokyo Olympics as it is now delayed.

The 10-episode series is being directed by Yuasa at Science SARU studio. Pyeon-Gang Ho is serving as series director. Toshio Yoshitaka is handling series composition, Naoya Wada is designing the characters, and Kensuke Ushio composing the series’ music.

The series will release worldwide on Netflix on July 9th.
